I think there should be a Hideaway type of dwelling. It could be a shack or a basement or a cave like you suggest. Nothing fancy, in fact adornment would give it away by drawing attention to itself.
I may go the other way, the Thief living in a legitimate house, like Thomas Crown had/has.Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

If you look at the housing in north Craglorn I can assure you that at the very least the outside is fairly close to what you describe.
i have looked there and it is not what i want. what i am looking for is a trap door on the surface hidden on the edge of town, exactly like the thiefs guild entrances are and definately located on the edge of town in preferably "Balmora" Vvardenfell location.
if Vvardenfell cannot be had right now then i prefer Dahlmora edge of town in Bal foyen.0 -

I join the DB on all of my Skyrim games and have always used hideout mods for my home, i have sewer homes, a hideout in Riften, and a couple cave homes scattered about. A fancy home in town is not a proper home for a member of the DB or TG. A proper home for your character can really add to the immersion as well.1

✭✭✭✭✭This is possible! In Nimalten, in The Rift, the crafting station for Night Mother's Gaze is entered through a trap door, and so is the Magnus crafting station in Stormhold in Shafowfen.
