After watching a few videos it seems you need to make a character that only crafts. I didn't realize there were so many points needed to be spent to maximize your crafting. Is that what everyone does or I reading into to it incorrectly ?

Because motif chapters and books (used to design armor) are character-bound, you're better off at least having your motif-dependent crafts in one character: clothcraft, woodworking, and blacksmithing.

You can do provisioning, enchanting, and alchemy on alternative characters without consequences.

Very new player so sorry for the dumb question. By your answer I assume the armor made by motif (not sure what that is) is soul bound?

When you learn how to craft in various styles, you learn that style by reading "motif" books/chapters. It can become very tedious/expensive to learn motifs on multiple characters, so pretty much one of your characters and only one should focus on such things (and hence blacksmithing, clothing, woodworking). HOWEVER, if you make a character strictly for crafting you will run into other issues and will need lots of skills to advance that character sufficiently to have enough skill points to do such; I personally advocate making your main character your crafter as in time they will have far more skill points than are needed both for crafting and for battle-skills anyhow.

Welcome to ESO and hope you get started on learning/researching traits ASAP (that's the actual long/tedious part of learning crafting so you'll want to start it quickly).

Hmm... If I understand your question correctly, I think the answer is nope.

When you create a new character, you will automatically be able to craft armor in the style of the race that you are. Say, for example, dunmer (dark elf). You can also quickly/randomly acquire the other standard races motifs quite easily: bosmer/wood elf, khajit, nord, and so on. Say you start questing and come across an Orc motif, you can either sell it, learn it, or trade it to another character to learn it.

With the style learned, when you craft a item (weapon or armor), you can make it in the style of your race or other styles (motifs) you've acquired. The items are unbound, meaning tradable with others. I believe this is what you mean by soul bound. Thus, crafted gear is sellable and tradable to others. A typical crafting request will look like: "can anyone make 6 trait hundings rage, all medium, in glass style?"

The motif chapters/books themselves are tradable as well. Once you decide to learn it, by clicking on it, it disappears and only the character that read that book can craft that style. It is possible to get duplicate motifs and learn the same style on multiple characters, but it can be time consuming and costly. At this point in the game, there's an absurd amount of motifs that you can acquire. They're purely cosmetic though, and you can still perform the most important functions of being a crafter without many of them.

It is finite, but it is also a rather large quantity (over 300).

well, depends on how fast you want to level crafting, I did not know this either and I leveled my main char as provisioner, alchemist and all crafter except enchanting, she has 370 CPs and am on level 50 of all crafting except enchanting and can craft 5 - 6 traits armors now. I am leveling an alt now as enchanter.

The first character I made in the game became my main smith/wood/clothing crafter. She gets all the new motifs, and I've done all the research to do 9 traits for gear with her. I'm slowly leveling her alchemy/provisioning/enchanting. I did a respec after finishing the research and got rid if the "research multiple items" skills. Research was done, and I didn't need it anymore. That freed up points for other things.

My second "main" character has maxed skills for smith/wood/clothing, but I haven't done nirn research with her, and she doesn't have all the motifs. She is maxed skills for provisioning/enchanting/alchemy, and she gets all the new recipes first. I might start some of the nirn research with her just to have it done, but there is no way I'm going to duplicate getting all the motifs my first character has.

The other ten characters I have get skills randomly. At least I can find mats at all different levels with them if nothing else. I haven't maxed out the cp level for any of my characters yet; I'm at cp 354 [350 something, I don't remember exactly]. It takes time, but you can do all the crafts on one character, if you want.
