Has every player turned into a toxic jerk? (rant)

So I'm a humble female player here in the PS4 NA server, DC if that matters. 460CP, if that even matters. Plus subscriber. Lately, I've had a huge gripe with what seems like literally every player I run into happens to be an elitist douchy jerk.

I'm wondering if this is something perhaps console exclusive, or if this is also a problem on pc (idk, because my 10-year old laptop sucks). It's gotten so bad, I have to be cautious about even the guilds I'm in - which btw, I do not recommend joining the [Snip] - if they want to be a bunch of other-alliance hating, sexist elitists, they can do so without me (they quite literally all ganged up on me via text chat when I pointed out one of the members being an item scammer, shouting sexist insults at me and all. Sad times when even your own guild turns on you).

But I run into this alot. Even for being CP460, it's almost as if no one wants to group with you unless you're top-tier CP531+. Which is why I have to rely on guilds more, except I have to be careful even with those (so I guild-hop alot, it's sad).

I consider myself an understanding, mature adult (30yrs old if you care), and I help and assist other players if need be. I don't understand the increase in this douchy bsing attitude, and I feel like it's getting worse. Almost to the point where even the game is no longer enjoyable.

And no you can't have my stuff. (j/k)

I don't play console but I run a very nice guild on both the NA and EU servers for the PC. We don't put up with the behaviour you're ranting about. We're also the largest LGBT Friendly Guild around with over 800 members between all of the continents. I can't help you buy a new laptop but if you do make it to the PC servers, look me up. My Screen name here is my @Name in game.

Has to be with evolution. 10 years ago the people was different in every online game. But with the time, as the same of the rest of the real world, everything start to became more and more toxic also in the internet.

Specially the new generation, people under the 30 years old I would say, they have just *** in their head, they have no education at all and the same as with they do with their fathers or in the real world, they do it online. They like bullying, they like to insult and they have no good manners.

Problem is that this actitude is very contagious in internet, because if you find one, two, three jerks then your actitude start to change the same...

Is not this game, is this year 2016, that is not the same as 2004...

This is the reason I quit playing FFXIV, well that, and the release of ESO. Players like this are everywhere unfortunately; I used to believe they were just really busy people, that wanted to get *** done. However, no one with a profession behaves like that, so I figured they must be teenagers, or maybe older, and just not as far along in their lives, or just really struggling to find meaning in life?

I know this all sounds harsh, and who am I to pass judgement on anyone's behavior. But, my best guess now, is that these meanies are lost in life, in that they are only getting a sense of achievement/accomplishment in life from the current video game they're playing, which can only happen if they aren't challenging themselves outside of the game. Not to mention, one can achieve so much in a game within a day, making the delay of gratification so immensely small that they probably find it hard to feel accomplished anywhere else, where delays in gratification are so much longer. I see it being kind of similar to someone who wants a cigarette, but instead they seek out achievements, or acquiring items that are valued by that video game's community. So, any hindrance to that sense of accomplishment essentially takes away from their sense of self-worth. They're blaming you for not helping them feed their addiction. Basically, all of this means that their anger is more about themselves, than it is about you. They don't see it either, and it's probably got control of their lives which is also probably really frustrating to them; it's all anxiety and suffering, really, lol. So, in a sense, they're in a really *** up place, to the point that it's actually sort of sad.

It's definitely gotten worse as the game matures and we are left with only the serious players.

    [...]

Pvp is pretty toxic at times, and end-game PVE is very elitist.

    [...]

PvP can absolutely be toxic, but PvE is understandable from where I sit.

My guild is progressing through vMoL and are currently working on the twins. If ANYONE messes up once during this fight, then the full group of 12 people dies. Think about that for a second. In a potentially 5-8 minute fight if anyone in 12 people misses the color swap, or disconnects, or misses a purge/heal, dies on the wrong side of the arena, uneven group partitions, mis-chains an add, makes a bad call, etc, everyone dies. This leads to a huge amount of frustration.

So then you can perhaps understand why end game pve players can get rather elitist. When we are doing stuff like this, but our tank can't be bothered to sidestep selene's bear, it gets a little frustrating to us.

    @OP
It does suck that you've gained the impression that everyone is a jerk. Typically I'll give anyone a chance for most group content if see
    • The tank actually pulling and controlling adds
    • The other dps dealing enough damage for me to notice their presence
    • The healer actually healing and buffing the group (Being a part of vet trials has changed what I expect from healers)

not everyone, all my guildies even welcome to help all new player (new player guildies at least) regarding of PvE and PvP, you probably just join the wrong guild full of d-bag and only care about min-max build, dungeon run or something like that

try to find new guild with intention of helping, having fun, family centric/friendly, mature etc, i see lot of guild like that in PC NA, and also join couple of them, and they live up with what they advertise about

I used to run into a lot of elitist people playing PC; especially running in PvP or trying to do a dungeon. Seemed fairly common to have someone telling a group member they were terrible at being a Tank/Healer/DPS/Butler. People rage quitting a group or the like. It does get really annoying dealing with some people as in my case who like to play with random players and then want to complain. I took a hiatus from playing and just got back in; the holiday event has been nice, especially with how much people are freely giving the Hallowjack motif pages, and generally getting along and having fun.

I will admit, if I que up for a Random Dungeon and my 3 teamates are lower than level 15, I will cringe on the inside. However, I never make any comments and always do my best to help them through. Hell, half the time they handle themselves better and with more confidence than the veterans I've run with.

It would be nice if everyone was open minded to not make judgement based on someone''s class or CP level, sadly that is often not the case.

That is why I will PVE, but often find myself Roleplaying with the others in the community. It gives us something to do between DLCs and updates and also is one of the few activities we can partake in where character level has nothing to do with our abilities ;)

Part of the problem is the reactionary nature of the playerbase. Text is a hard medium to communicate with and people will outright throw up their hands and discard someone as a whiner at the first opportunity. This makes disagreements common. I asked for people not to use hardmode scroll on a helm run and got called a whiner and actively harassed in PM's about it.

The second part of the problem is, differing audiences. The difficulty crowd that became a vocal minority around the time darksouls was a thing has started coming to games and demanding things be harder. Then people push back because as we've seen many times over, harder content is sometimes only completeable for the elite. Then people get pissed.

Another part of the problem, at least in the PVE community, is the recent scaling with One Tamriel. It's effected dungeons in a negative way, for sure. people with subpar/bad DPS are being kicked and rejected outright because the new dungeon scailing no longer leaves room for them. Then they either rush to the forums to rage or quit. With this games inherent inability to teach players how to do their jobs, players have no way of avoiding this.

And this is in a game where everyone and their mother has a DPS toon and High DPS is needed to get best in slot gear which gives you better DPS. It dosent come down to class mastery or reflexes. It comes down to gear and have you *** your build? Many players get to endgame and find they dont have skill lines leveled up, dont have certain skills, because the game never states taking one might be a good idea. "Play how you want" is a lie that conflicts with every single level of this game, and it either needs to start giving us rigid classes or sample builds to fix the problem of the PVE community. Either that or nerf dungeons.

The last one is a particularly big issue and the only one that can be actively fixed, but still. What do you expect will happen when a bunch of players rush the place and start screaming 'git gud' at anyone struggling or having a different opinion?

Edit: As an epitaph to that story, I logged in, asked what DPS specs are good to get into, and got no response exept hostile ones that slowly escalated from "Figure it out" to "Git gud filthy casual"

I'm sad to hear stuff like this, I'm regularly playing with female players and I usually had the feeling that they were treated well, but that might be depending on the guild. One of my regulars for 4 man content / vdsa is a lovely British woman. If you'd been on PC EU I would've invited you to one of my guilds of which h I think it would be suitable for you. There are always stupid people out there. I got insulted last week for wanting to help someone with their build, as he ran into trash mobs in vet Wayrest Sewers all the time and died. He told me that his setup on a stamblade was BiS and that I should **** off and go die, even though he ran around with a two handed. Sometimes, being friendly does not pay off :D

I'm sorry you are having a rough time.

this morning .. well sorta (it was about noon to 1:30 which is my "morning" before work) I went in a dungeon with my lvl 40 Orc Templar (currently a healer while leveling, eventually will switch to tank) and my sweetie was on with his mega CP 400+ amazo-tank.

We ran ICP with a CP 300+ and a lvl 12 as our DPS. Everyone was cool with the 12th level person (who hit 13th halfway through); we ended up not being able to finish the last boss, but it was still a good experience. yeah I know "you need high levels yadda yadda" but the run was still fun.

Your first mistake is assuming people care what your gender is. I never tell anyone what gender I am in the game and I don't have any issues with anyone, in ESO or any other game I play. If you don't want issues with people then don't give them reasons to make issues. Being female is a reason, trust me.

Now when I was younger and cared about bonding with people online, I told everyone I was a female and issues followed me around like flies on crap. This is great advice and agree completely. I'm I much older female edging towards retirement age. Throughout my years of gaming, I really haven't had an issue. But then again, I never make it a focus. Over time, my guild mates will eventually find out but I don't go around advertising it. I've found that some in my past guilds, some gals have made it a big issue and as @Soafee says, trouble starts following. Best to go about your playing, have fun, treat others well but keep your identity private.

However with that said, I find some players are just jerks and it doesn't matter about gender, age, etc. The first sign of weakness or troubles in a dungeon, some folks just fall apart. I actually feel a bit sorry for them and chalk it up to real life problems.

I'm sorry for your experience but I think you've just run into some bad people or the bad ones are the ones that stick in people's memories. I've encountered a lot of incredible and helpful people. I've definitely run into some real a**holes but i've tuned them out. Like other people suggested is leave that guild. The game is supposed to be fun.
