But thats what concerns me about those crown crates. They're already a rip off (pts version with all those useless consumables), and even though all rare drops are cosmetic now (except 150% exp scrolls), I'm afraid they can add something like tempers or actual gear pieces in those crates to make them more valuable and to make people buy them...
I tried Blade and Soul recently, and in that game there's seasonal rng box events that drop some of the BiS gems (items that work similar to TESO enchants, they can be attached to weapon to add more damage and/or special properties like lifesteal), upgrade mats are sold in cash shop and there's a special interface for buying and selling gold. People were also talking about drop rate changes (undocumented, of course) that were implemented to make cash shop/buing gold more desirable. I dont want this to happen in TESO.

Dont hold your breath, Crown Crates coming soon and we all know how cash shop RNG crates eventually worked out in other games that introduced the system.

I agree that I don't want these things to change in ESO. That's one of the reasons I thought this post was timely and important to make. These things that set the game apart from the competition are important and if they continue to hold this line, they will continue to have loyal players.

I don't agree with this personally. I would love to be able to buy a mount for a friend on their birthday. As long as all the consumables are less powerful than crafted ones, and the other items are cosmetic, and no items can be sold for in game gold, I'm fine with gifting.
Elijah_Crow wrote: »I just have to say Kudos to ZOS. With One Tamriel, I have several friends returning to the game. They quit because they have limited play time and got separated from the rest of our gaming group by levels and never caught up. Many just couldn't invest the time to grind from VR1 to VR14 in order to be able to play with us early on.
In addition, we were also discussing the fact that with almost every modern MMO, you can spend real life income to get in game currency. Even in most MMO's where you can't buy currency directly, you can buy a ton of lockboxes and put the contents or the boxes themselves on the in game market and earn currency to gear your character. This includes WoW, SWTOR, BDO, GW2, etc, etc.
I want to thank ZOS for holding the line here and even though I may not agree with lockboxes, I'm thankful that the economy is protected and people are prevented from buying their way to the top of the game as the boxes and contents can't be sold or traded.
Never separated from your friends by levels and you can't buy your way to the top. Two points that I can't applaud enough and for me that makes ESO #1.
Are there any other modern AAA MMO's who are holding the line here with ZOS and preventing real life income providing character power?
Edit: I would also like to note to ZOS, that this is a great selling point for many players these days. It's a great way to differentiate your game and product from the rest. Yes, you may make less from "whales", but you will have a healthier game and community over all. If this is also important to you, please help in letting ZOS know by posting below.

The items probably won't be able to be sold directly for gold, but there is no system in place that would restrict the person receiving the "gift" from sending you gold later. It's a crowns to gold exchange. Whether or not that's a good or bad thing is up for debate, but it would still be a thing.

Even if someone was purchasing items for a character with a stolen credit card, It still can't impact the economy or character strength.

I'm not saying it would be bad, but it would have an impact. In your example, someone gets a mount from the crown store for ingame gold basically. The other party however has just bought in game gold for real world money. They can then use that gold to buy gear to power themselves up. This right here might be at least part of the reason for the shift toward more bound on pickup items from dungeons. If ZoS has anticipated that gold can be bought for money in the future, they might have altered the game around that. I'm going a bit "conspiracy theory" here but just trying to say that game mechanics and systems might be altered in order to accommodate crown item gifting in the future. Is that bad? That's up to you to decide.

Like the post, but this is where we disagree. If you can buy your friend a mount, motif, lockbox for their birthday, what is to stop me from going in zone chat with: WTS Crown Lock Boxes for 50k Gold. If that becomes a common occurrence, I am out of here.
A simple way to stop this would be to make a requirement where you have to be ingame friends with someone for a reasonable amount of time (3 months) before you buy them stuff. Just a thought.
