Player housing - whats the point?

Probably a bit controversial to ask this given the support it seems to generate but…

Whats the point of player housing?
  • is it just a base of operations that you are likely to return to frequently?
  • Does it provide extra storage?
  • Does it give you anything the game doesn’t already? Eg craft stations?
  • Is it just a money sink (gold and crowns)
  • Is it to aid roleplay?
  • Would a guild hall not be a better option?

Don’t get me wrong, I’ll probably get a small one somewhere but I cant see when I would ever use it, other than as a dumping ground for cr*p I collect.

It makes me feel more connected to the world. A place to live. I can't remember any mmo I have played without housing. Ok, I do: PotBS and Tabula Rasa. All other games I played had it:

    Sage of Ryzom
    SWG
    Vanguard
    EQ2
    BDO
    SWTOR (later on)

I like to decorate, store loot and a place to retreat. It's my little private part of the world. I just like it.

I guess ESO's housing will provide the following for me:

    - furniture crafting
    - decoration
    - extra storage
    - guild meetings in a large house

I can't wait for it to be implemented. I always want a small or medium house so not to big.

The key to a nightblade's success is avoidance, by spell or by stealth; with these skills, all things are possible."

It's a fun thing to help people feel like they own a little part of The world, and to make them feel like they live in the world.

All in the name of fun.

    Say it again; FUN.

It gives the ERPers a quiet place to RP where they won't be interrupted or trolled. :P

For real, though, I want it to store loot, to be able to customize, hopefully to make for easier harvesting of materials (such as alchemy... ZOS please add a garden!)

But it all depends on what will actually make it in.

    Let's assume....and I mean a big assume

That this gives us a meeting point because it's phased
    -meeting point for guild
    -group up point for guilds
-trade houses for ppl who don't want to use traders
    -RP events and experiences
    -crafting opportunities
    -story line opportunities
    -character customization options
    -achievements

Me personally, it's just something to do but I'm poor now so I prob need to start playing again and hit $2mil gold at some point

They have yet to tell us.

I expect that it will mainly serve to change the game to be more single player friendly, while tossing a bone to multiplayer by letting us invite others into our house.

Hopefully it takes the best of multiple MMOs that have done it well. Notable for me were:

Dark Age of Camelot (DAoC) - provided crafting stations at your house, as well as a "market seller" that you could individually list your stuff on to sell (on your front porch). Everyone could swing by and buy from me without my needing to be there, and without requiring access to my house itself. This could be interesting as a compliment to trading guilds :)

Rift - Dimensions was an AWESOME way to create your own unique flovor of living quarters, which included many player crafted decoration pieces, including crafting keys to the dimensions (think a style of house + grounds around it) themselves.

Asheron's Call - individual housing, from small apartments with cheap monthly rent, to cottages, to larger villas with a lot more space to decorate and more player storage chests, all the way to huge Guild Mansions. Being able to travel instantly to your guild's mansion was a great way to build more of a sense of community within a guild. Don't really need guild halls when you have a Guild Mansion (though it also had generic guild halls in major cities)

Eagerly waiting for more details on what this will be like in ESO

I just hope its not like Garrisons in WoW. Felt like that hurt the game for me as nobody ever left them. Towns got a lot emptier. Everything you needed was in your garrison.

This is what I meant by "single player"... Garrisons are neat, but they are so wrong.

I expect that Housing will be similar to Oblivion and Skyrim, and have many attributes from DAoC. If they did a market stall, it would be like 30 guilds based on location since everyone who "owns" the house would have access to it. I don't know how they would control the size of the offerings since the 500 guild members and 30 slots neatly limits the amount of stuff for sale. I am not sure it would "compliment" Guild Traders, either.

I am figuring that you will be able to travel to your house from any wayshrine for free, or from any location for gold. I hope that houses do not include a wayshrine for outbound travel. They need to do housing in a way that does not put everyone locked nicely in a house so the world is empty.

I also wish they did guild housing as well as private housing.

For a sandbox element that the game currently doesn't have. What can you currently take ownership of in game and modify to your taste, apart from your toon? If you have no appetite for that sort of thing then that's great; you'll be financially better off, but many players do have an appetite for it. So take it or leave it, no harm done. I won't be buying any harstyles or dresses.

What's the point to this, what's the point to that...

This is a video game. Plain and simple. There's no point to any of it other than entertainment. People find decorating, crafting, and the whole idea of housing fun.

What's the point of a Dungeon run? Does it pay the bills? Put food on the dinner table? No, it also simply entertains. Just like housing.

I would spend millions of gold to help fund an awesome guild hall. I see very little point in getting an apartment so I can just sit in there.

For me, the number one reason I want housing is that it seems it will include DPS test dummies. That alone is worth it IMO. The two other things that would make me spend serious gold/crowns would be:

    1. Farmland where I can grow alchemy mats.
    2. Mannequins that I can dress and access from any character. That would be a game changer. I would pay lots of crowns to be able to dress 8 -10 mannequins, and then be able to go onto any character and equip, for example, mannequin number 3.

I think it would be cool if housing had armor & weapon racks that you could store a complete set of armor & weapons on. SO like.. if you were regularly leveling characters in BWB & making/collecting sets every few levels... you could hang a set of armor on a rack that was "Lvl10 stamina set" (for example) & when you level your next guy, he could take that set off the rack & use it.

Another random idea is having a pantry to store all your crafted food, drinks, potions & poisons. So again, when a character levels up & wants higher level food/drink/potions/poisons.. he takes it from the pantry & leaves the lower level stuff in there for the next character to level with.

Because having a house, or 3 or 4, has been a part of The Elder Scrolls Universe since Daggerfall. Morrowind, Oblivian, Skyrim, all had housing. If you played any other TES titles, you'd know why we are so excited...
