I just hope its not like Garrisons in WoW. Felt like that hurt the game for me as nobody ever left them. Towns got a lot emptier. Everything you needed was in your garrison.
Hopefully it takes the best of multiple MMOs that have done it well. Notable for me were:
Dark Age of Camelot (DAoC) - provided crafting stations at your house, as well as a "market seller" that you could individually list your stuff on to sell (on your front porch). Everyone could swing by and buy from me without my needing to be there, and without requiring access to my house itself. This could be interesting as a compliment to trading guilds
Asheron's Call - individual housing, from small apartments with cheap monthly rent, to cottages, to larger villas with a lot more space to decorate and more player storage chests, all the way to huge Guild Mansions. Being able to travel instantly to your guild's mansion was a great way to build more of a sense of community within a guild. Don't really need guild halls when you have a Guild Mansion (though it also had generic guild halls in major cities)
Probably a bit controversial to ask this given the support it seems to generate but…
Whats the point of player housing?
- is it just a base of operations that you are likely to return to frequently?
- Does it provide extra storage?
- Does it give you anything the game doesn’t already? Eg craft stations?
- Is it just a money sink (gold and crowns)
- Is it to aid roleplay?
- Would a guild hall not be a better option?
Don’t get me wrong, I’ll probably get a small one somewhere but I cant see when I would ever use it, other than as a dumping ground for cr*p I collect.
It's a fun thing to help people feel like they own a little part of The world, and to make them feel like they live in the world.
All in the name of fun.
Say it again; FUN.
