It depends what you mean as "effective", mdk can be effective even naked... Yep some people used it, it is mediocore viable cause u can easily reach high numbers without putting too much effort in it. And yes in PURE single target fights it becomes less viable.

Heavy attack build is not a build that i may use for ex. I would prefer bruning spellweave for insane spelldamage buff with 66% uptime.

So elegant is mostly viable for sorcerer overload builds.

Then probably 5 x Burning Spellwave (head, shoulder, jewelry) + 5 x Law of Julianos or TBS (the rest or the armor) + 2 x Torug (swords)/1 x Maelstrom flame staff would be more viable? I don't yet have a mature Magicka DK, as I'm training my other chars ATM. But at least to know what to farm and what to keep. I have 1-2 pieces of spellwave already and I'll be running CoA as it comes for pledges.

Focus on increasing your offensive stats thru food buff (max health/stam), gear (sets and quality), mundus (Thief or Thief and Shadow)
Have a set rotation, especially taking into account vMA daggers, to keep your DoTs up as much as possible, but without overwriting existing ones
Have a group debuffing your targets while buffing you. You will never sustain 50k+ DPS on your own, you'll need Warhorn, Spell Power cure, Combat prayer (Minor Berzerk), Major & Minor fracture, Major & Minor brutality... to pull the highest numbers
Work on your CP distribution. Knowing how much % of your damage is critical, how much is physical / poison, how much % is made of DoTs or direct damage will allow you for optimum distribution (there's a spreadsheet to automatically calculate it)
Weave light attacks inbetween abilities. For a stam DK, it usually does up to 10% of your total damage.
Don't die. A dead DD deals no damage. Slotting Vigor instead of that fighters guild ability will make you lose 3% weapon damage, but will probably save someone's life.

I really want to insist on the rotation, as it can make an absolutely massive difference and is something that most people overlook.

Not dying should be obvious, but people keep insisting on increasing their DPS, yet can't see the red circles. It's silly, but if you have to go on the defensive 80% of the time, you can't do any damage.

Magicka DK build (in my dream):

2x Grothdar (Vaults of Madness) heavy & medium in divines
5x Burning Spellweave (City of Ash 2) light divines

3x Infellible Aether/Moondancer jewelry in arcane (gold)
2x Sharpened Fire Maelstrom Staffs
or
4x Inf (main hand (jewelry + sharp fire staff))
1x vMA sharpened fire staff (backbar)

Swords sure can give u more shorttime power and extra damage to your skills but u loose almost same or even more damage from medium weaves. So in general swords are bad for mdks, in the current meta swords are bad for every1 except vMA grinders (and even then i can disput about swords vs another staff (on a sorc)).
