One Tamriel, how does it work for single playing?

I still don't know much about One Tamriel. I have tried reading about it, but from what I gather it just for playing with friends and not worrying about levels. So how does it effect me, someone who only plays PvE and like a single player game. I only have an Altmer who is level 8 when I stopped playing on PC. I play on Xbox One now but was thinking of trying PC again. Man the graphics are so awesome on PC totally forget how GORGEOUS ESO looks on PC. Still looks good on Xbox One/PS4 but man can't beat a PC.

But I guess this goes for Xbox One if I decide I can't play on PC since I am not good on mouse and keyboard. Before anyone says I can use a controller playing ESO I can't. I tried using third party soft ware and it's not the same and I can't use my Xbox One Elite controller. The Xbox One and PS3 controller hurt my hands so I can only use a Xbox One Elite controller. But for now I am willing to try again with mouse and keyboard again.

So do I play like normal I can only do Aldmeri Dominion quests or can I go and do other alliance quests now? If so, how do I start doing Daggerfall Covenant or Ebonheart Pacts quests?

I was thinking of starting a new character but I like the look of my character (is it called a toon? Why called toon? Curious.) so will just continue where I left playing with my level 8 Altmer sorcerer.

Thanks for any help or tips you can give me.

    Hi there!

You can certainly play solo if that's what you prefer. You may need some help at World Bosses, so you can ask in chat or just wait till someone shows up.

As for your character (I think "toon" is short for "cartoon"?), you can keep the one you like. They can now go to any zone and do the quests there. I'm not 100% sure how the wayshrines are unlocked, but it should be pretty intuitive once you are in the game.

So you can decide to do the Dominion quests first, and then the other alliances, or you can pick a zone and go there. It's all up to you now.

Since I don't know how the game plays properly, how do I get to the other provinces? Do I just keep walking there, or do I go to a boat for an option to travel there or do I need way shines? I looked at way shrines and they are in a solid black. Can I still visit them and travel that way?

The update is great for solo players because you really can go anywhere and just do whatever you feel like doing. You can keep doing AD quests, or you can go talk to a navigator (I don't remember if that's what they're actually called) down at the Vulkhel Guard docks (there's one of these NPCs in each zone, but if you're level 8 AD the one in Vulkhel Guard is likely to be the easiest one for you to get to). The navigator will give you the option of traveling to other zones within AD, or to travel to another alliance, so you can choose to go to Daggerfall or Davon's Watch and start doing the DC or EP quests.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that through using the navigators a few times you can get to any non-DLC non-Craglorn zone in the game. Basically all of Tamriel is opened up to you.

Also, doesn't ESO on PC now support Xbox controllers? I thought Xbox was the one that you could use for ESO without any 3rd party software... I could be wrong though, and maybe it wouldn't support the Elite controller anyway. I hate controllers personally, so I don't really know.

In general you have to visit a wayshrine first, to discover it and unlock it for use.

Thank you UrQuan very much. I will look for these "navigators" That helps a lot.

As for Xbox One controller, I tried using it and with Zenimax's beta controller support it's not working for me and I can't get any answers yet on how to programme it or fix my issue since the Xbox One or even my PS3 controller is not working with it. Not sure if I need a PS4 controller. I do have a logitech game pad/controller but had the same issues. The buttons don't correspond to what it's suppose to do and when I go to the option screen to remap the buttons, I only see the keyboard layouts.

I am also playing on Mac so not sure if the problem would be fixed if I boot in Mac mode. But I will not do that and waste all that data installing ESO on an external hard drive (since I don't have enough room on my laptop in window mode) if the same issues will go.

Again thanks for the navigator help. Will check it out.

That is what I thought. Thank you for verifying it for me.

For new PVE players, it is a consistent unchanging environment that scales to you. If you ignore the concept of levels and focus on allocating skill points and keeping gear primed, the game is very friendly to new players. It is not possible to over or under level. However, you really have to play in the moment more than have a big plan. If you enter the game looking to shoot up to max level and conquer the game, I think that things are going to be different from expectations. The top of the ladder looks a lot like the bottom of the ladder, just with more champion points and skills.

You don't actually need to go to a navigator as far as I've found, the starter zone wayshrines are automatically available from the outset so you can reach them from your own nearest wayshrine.

For a new player especially, I think there's every advantage in sticking to your own alliance questline and advancing through the game that way until you have completed the main story for the first time. In the meantime, however, you can fit in any DLC content you fancy such as the Dark Brotherhood and Thieves Guild without worrying that if you do them before you hit level 50 you'll have out-leveled the base game content when you return to it. After the main story you have plenty of options including visiting all the other alliance areas.

If you're playing with friends then One Tamriel offers the benefit of being able to play with them regardless of their alliance and level, but if you're playing alone then running through each alliance content with separate characters can't really be beaten, although if you're the type who only plays one character then you now have the freedom to choose when to do the other alliance areas.

I'd suggest you stick to one character in his/her alliance areas for at least the first 10-15 levels and by then you may have a better idea as to how you wish to proceed. I'd also suggest leaving your level 8 character at least for now and starting another one from scratch.

This all depends, of course, on how far you have got on console, I've addressed the issue mainly from the perspective of a new player but if you have a dozen cp capped characters on console then you'll know more about the game than me anyway  !

The big difference for people who play solo is that you can do quests and even entire zones in any order you like. You will never be under levelled or over levelled for any content.

So you can keep picking up and completing quests as you find them and they'll guide you through the different zones exactly as it was before, but if you want to skip ahead to higher level stuff you can do that. Which does include going to the other alliances zones. Some cities have NPCs on the docks who will take you to the other alliances starting cities, but you'll also find one wayshrine in each one is unlocked so you can just teleport there. But the update also means you don't have to leave your alliances zone and go to join another one to continue gaining XP once you reach level 50 (although the Cadwell's Silver and Gold quests are still in the game).

You could start a new character if you wanted to, but you don't have to. Maybe keep your current character as they are but start a new one and then see which you prefer, or play both if you want to.

As for why they're called a toon I'm not entirely sure. The word toon is short for cartoon character and was invented for the movie Who Framed Roger Rabbit. I've heard that people call their video game characters (and MMO characters in particular) that because in many games they look like cartoon characters but I don't think it's ever been the official name for them. I'm not sure if it started with a specific game either, lots of people have told me it did but it always seems to be that was the first one where they heard it used and someone else will claim it started with a different one.

Sometimes you'll also see people call them avatars. I think that's mainly people who play/ed Ultima Online. The main character in most of the Ultima games is called The Avatar and they carried that name over to the MMO. Which makes sense because the character is your projection into the games world.

But I prefer simply calling them characters. They're not cartoon characters and they're not my avatar, they're a character I've invented to fulfil a role in a story, just like the characters in a book or a movie.

It definitely wasn't invented for Who Framed Roger Rabbit. That movie came out in the late 80s and there was a pen and paper RPG in the early 80s called TOON (I think it was all in caps anyway) where you played cartoon characters. The term probably wasn't widely used until Who Framed Roger Rabbit though.

The term avatar might have been popularized for player's characters by Ultima, but it's been around in games for longer than UO for sure. It's been used since the 80s at least to refer to any digital representation of the user of a computer - whether that's a character they control in a game or an image they use on a message board, or whatever. And now I'm trying to remember if they used the term in Tron...

Of course, it originally comes from Hinduism, where the term means the earthly manifestation of a god. RPGs like D&D have been using the term in the same sense as the original since the 70s.

Yes I am. I am playing on MacOS El Capitan. I have Joystick Mapper but just doesn't feel fluid enough for me. I thought with the beta support for controller it would be different but it doesn't work for me.

If he is using Joystick Mapper, I would love to hear how to use it properly. I am not very knowledgeable how how to use controllers on computers. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Heya, @Davor, I'm that friend @AlnilamE mentioned - pleased to see a fellow Mac adventurer!

First, to address the "Controller Beta" settings that are currently in the game client: the last time I checked, those do absolutely nothing on a Mac. You can turn on "controller mode" and the UI will change slightly, but you can't map any controller keys to actions directly through the game because no controller is currently supported by the MacOS ESO client. I haven't been reading the patch notes as diligently as I maybe should, but as far as I know this is still true (Alni can probably correct me if there's been anything of note in there).

As Alni eluded to, I've been playing ESO on MacOS with a PS4 controller since beta. In short, I use a $25 piece of software for the Mac called ControllerMate that, while somewhat complex to set up, gives you near-absolute control over how your controller interacts with your system. I wrote up a full post on these very forums of how I have it set it up for ESO:

    https://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/65578/how-to-play-eso-on-mac-with-a-controller/p1

I've updated a few things about the setup in the 2 years+ since that post, but mostly just minor tweaks and personal convenience features. There are still some things that I use the kbd/mouse for - mail and chat (obviously), crafting, group and guild frames, etc - but all of my combat, NPC interactions, and general adventuring is done via the controller and I wouldn't have it any other way.

If you decide to try it out and have any questions/problems, please post them in that thread - I'd like to keep all of the support information in one place.:+1:

Thank you very much for the post. I will read your link after this. I have Joystick Mapper, is that any good or should I try ControllerMate? Is it easy to use?

As for your PS4 controller comment. Can I use my Xbox One Elite Controller with this or Xbox One Controller or does it have to be a PS4 controller?

Off to reading your post now and thank you very much for taking your time writing this.
