Alts in different alliances.

I have heard stories of people being kicked out of guilds for being caught playing PvP on one of their alts that happens to be in a different alliance.

I even asked some people I was in a group chat about this and they seemed to feel that this is perfectly appropriate.

I am not sure what to think. I have Alts in all three alliances and members of guilds spread across alliances too. This isn't some kind of tactic to interfere with the flow of campaigns but simply to keep my options open. Given (until one Tamriel) it is only possible to play with friends with characters that are in the same alliance I like knowing in principle I should be able to play with anyone. I don't play enough PvP to have had much issue anyway but hoped to get some feedback.

It was implied by some that any time spent in PvP should be devoted to your guild. I even heard remarks of creating separate accounts if you want to play a different alliance.

The practicality of dedicating yourself exclusively to one alliance means that any alts you have in a different alliance can never be trained up with PvP abilities. This is not the end of the world.

I may personally think it is just a game and I should be able to play with friends in whatever faction I want and not take it so seriously. At the same time if it is really so badly frowned upon or may cause too much fall out I can live with limiting myself to just PvP in one alliance.

Whoever makes the guild makes the rules, IMO. Hopefully those rules are clearly communicated. If one of the rules is no cross-faction PvP, then you have to decide whether or not you want to stay in that guild.

There is a group of folks I ran with that switched from another alliance for a couple of weeks. Now they're back on their previous alliance farming my alliance. Should I judge them for their choices?

A lot of the questions you brought up are things I am pondering myself, but have no real clear cut answer for. I believe it boils down to what you yourself believe is just. But this is one of those things where the answer is pretty gray.

A clear problem occurred to me last night. I reset my morphs (and attributes) on my original character to try and make him more effective. I created him before being too familiar with the game. I used some of the freed up skill points to fill gaps in my crafting skills. I have been adapting him as a back up crafter. I digress though. The main issue is that at the point this character is in the game, skill points are not so easy to come by. I cannot get them by levelling. I can only get them now from skyshards, dungeons and some of the quests for other alliances. I have already got all of the sky shards in some of the other alliance zones.

Then there is Cyrodiil with 45 skyshards scattered through the 3 alliance areas. Not to mention some skill points acquired from levelling up in the alliance war. That is 15 skill points in skyshards alone. I will need 8 more just to finish maxing out crafting. More still to morph some of the abilities I used to have morphed prior to the reset.

I don't think it would be fair to sacrifice that many skill points while struggling with a shortage. It is possible to hunt skyshards while not actively participating in the campaign. I think there should be allowances for that.

In my opinion it is just lame and immature, if someone takes this game so serious, that they need to kick people from their guilds because of this :)

    I agree with you

I mean I have been using other means of collecting skill points too. Last night I was invited into a group to try and complete Blackheart Haven. I had been trying to find a group to do it for ages and not found one so was glad to think I could tick that dungeon off and get the skillpoint for it. Near the end one player dropped out and it turned out we couldn't manage to progress with just the remaining 3 people. So after 1200 gold repair costs for my gear and many soul gems used I walked away empty handed.

I tried looking at the daily pledge for Undaunted and left the group finder running while hunting skyshards. I went in into my journal to get an idea of which places I had left to find them. Cyrodill stood out. During my time skyshard hunting the activity finder never found a group in spite of it being a daily pledge dungeon.

I conclude that relying on dungeons as a source of skill points is very problematic. It is also a bit catch 22 as I want to do the dungeons to get the skill points but I want the skill points to make my character more effective at completing the dungeons.

An easy solution is to play characters of different alliances in different PvP campaigns.

Different guilds have different rules for players. If you join a guild, you should follow their rules. If you don't like the rules, join a different one. I'm in a Pact PvP guild and almost everyone has alts in different alliances. We like playing out numbered so when EP population is too high and we can't find good fights, we switch to a different alliance.

You should be loyal to the alliance you're playing at any given moment, beyond that it's a game and people should play whatever makes them happy.

I love both my factions and have friends on both sides, PvP and PvE.

I would already try to avoid having alts on different sides of the same campaign. I don't know if that is enough to appease hardcore loyalists or whether they still would not want me playing for any other alliance. I am not one for switching characters and sides during the same campaign to try and maximise personal gain. I think that deserves to be frowned upon.

When I say personal gain I mean things like trying to get more alliance points by switching to the dominant side or one with the emperor.

It is a more grey area if you change sides to an underpopulated faction in the interests of trying to make the game more balanced. Even so I would understand the guild not liking that if they are actively playing as part of a particular campaign. They might not care if it is not a campaign they are engaged in. Who knows?!

At the beginning of any campaign or when joining the campaign the first time, you should be able to select a banner. Your Account shouldnt be able to participate under another banner during the duration of this campaign. Your other chars should be able to join this campaign under the same banner.

This seems like a reasonable constraint.
