One caveat with the group plan, though - you don't get hardly any Telvar. If I'm solo I get 1K Telvar in about 30 min (15 when there was the bonus), but if I'm in a group of more than two it takes much longer.
I usually go when most everyone is asleep, like 4am server time (10pm my time). I also passively discourage gankers during this time by only carrying less than 750 Telvar, and when I have Zero telvar pursuing them and harassing them as much as I can. I don't care if I'm outnumbered and will probably die when I have 0 Telvar, so I just look where they go and head them off.
Also, if you look where the sewer access is from above, you can usually predict where enemy players will come down and what general route they will follow, so I go to those areas at the beginning of my run. If you are DC or AD you only have one of them, so it should be easy to avoid. If you are EP they come at you from two directions, which sucks but even then it's fairly predictable the routes they will follow because most of the groups targeting PvE players in the Sewers are Templar no-skill 3-button lemmings with no original thought processes.
I get so *** tired of trying to do missions in sewers and 3 to 4 people jump me it gets old
