Since ZoS stated there will probably be no style and trait changing of items, I'd like to bring forth a simple idea.
Please give us a switch in the inventore which allows us to switch to another gear setup by the following icons.
Those are placeholders to explain in these thread.
If this icon is shown, the shown gear is working towards your stats and set bonus effects.
If this icon is shown, the shown gear is only visual.
Upon reentering the inventore it should always switch back to the working gear not on the visual gear to avoid confusion.

The real gear is a mix up of the Vicious Ophidian with some Abahs Watch and Redguard style.
The visual is (just for show) simple Iron Redguard Armor.

✭✭✭✭✭Definitely an idea in the right direction, but I don't think you should need to put a whole separate set of gear in the other slots to get the visuals. It would be a huge pain to carry around or bank all the different armor combinations you'd want to look like. Additionally it would hurt crafting significantly, since you'd never need to get gear crafted in that style ever again. On the other hand, if you were able to just click those slots and set them to any motif/armor weight you know how to craft, then you'd not hurt the crafting economy and you'd skip the inventory problem!Men'Do PC NA AD Khajiit

I only have 1 char that can craft all. I don't want to do it on all others too.
