Is this a damage shield for all kinds of damage or is it only for spells?

Just Spells (although updated to also absorb physical damage, weird). People frequently stack it with Hardened Ward.

Also, its really for use to replenish your pool as much a Shield.

Yes the shield is updated to absorb physical damage also, however magicka return only from absorbing spell damage.
