What would be your favorite weapon ? (If that choice would not have min-max consequences)

Do you make a build around your weapon of choice ?
and depending on how far you aim for min-max and your group role you make your further build choices

Or do you start with your group role, or highest min-max, or a certain armor set, and your weapon choice is only that what best fits to that.

As example why to do this poll: at this very moment we have a big change on the Lightning Staff.
I like very much to play with this staff, it is ranged , has a nice lightning beam, aiming at enemies in the middle of a small enemy group for the splash AOE, or that nasty archer in the corner.
With the patch I should change to the Fire staff from min-max considerations.

What would be your favorite weapon based on the character of the weapon, weapon play style and abilities/sets synergising with it.

Unarmed. I'd very much like to do a hand-to-hand Argonian magicka sorc (or maybe NB). Obviously completely impossible.

In the Bethesda single player ES games touch spells were more effective than ranged spells. So it was entirely possible to do a melee magic build. I think it's a shame that your equipped weapon affects casting efficiency in ESO.

I still use an ice staff on my sorcerer unless I'm doing high-end content, where I grudgingly swap to fire. I like turning enemies into ice sculptures and hearing the sound effects. I hope ice staves get some more love some day, I rarely see anyone using them :(.

I have a build that focuses on axe and shield. It hasn't been made for endgame content, I just really like using these weapons and wanted to explore how useful I might be. Oh, and to make things more difficult, i'm trying to eschew the use of magic based skills to focus on melee (because that's how I want the character to play). I have no idea how it will develop given the combat mechanics in the game.

the sword & board thing is strange, because in this game it is all about deffence, tanking etc. but as others have pointed out historically it was the weapon combo of choice, of course the shield gave defence but it could be used as a weapon too.

i think introducing passives like you get in dual weald, 2 hand & destro that change the performance of the equiped pieces would make for more variety.

I think introducing passives like you get in dual weald, 2 hand & destro that change the performance of the equiped pieces would make for more variety.

    On that history of S&B:
Sword and Shield, or in older times where you could not equip armies with expensive swords...it was Sword and Spear.

Shields were ofc effective against that even other old weapon: bows with arrows or thrown spears.
Shields were not used that much to Bash, but mainly to parry, followed up by a stab (from short sword like the Romans or short spear from older classic tribes, the Zulu etc)

When plate armor became more common, the Shield became more and more an ornamental item for weaponry heraldics and niche combat of tournaments on horse with a lance.
    Why ?
Plate armor was practical speaking impenetrable for arrows and stabs from swords => no Shield really needed
slow warhammers and maces could be parried well enough with your own weapon

And like you say: I think introducing passives like you get in dual weald, 2 hand & destro that change the performance of the equiped pieces would make for more variety

I also think it would be great if weapon combo's would (or could) be added to the passives of the weapon lines :)
Not only Block HA => off balance => more damage + knock down + more Stamina regain from your follow up HA,
But also a parry-stab combo possible as follow up move on a LA.
Sword or Dagger with Shield could for example have the parry-stab combo. Maces, Axes something else.

    It's not that easy.

I love huge two handed swords for melee (an axe would be better, but axes in ESO are somewhat small), I love flame staves when spellcasting, and I love bows when I feel like hunting silently.

I've been using a flame staff the most of those three, so I guess that qualifies it as my top favorite.

I've always loved throwing spells at others, and watching them burn to ashes in Elder Scrolls titles like Skyrim. I've always had a interest in magic in games, more so fire spells. In other games I've had some fire spells that heal and fire spells that destroyed. Also fire spells that debuffs a enemy and fire spells that buffs myself and allies in fire auras.

I play games to do magic and I'm a sucker for fireballs. It just seems so wizardy. I'v never especially liked lightening magic. It's not as impressive from first person and I don't play third in TES games. I used ice a lot in Skyrim even against resistant Nords because of the stamina drain but in ESO, the knockback from fire is useful once I have enough magica to keep running. I don't PvP or group so other considerations don't matter. If I like it and it keeps me alive I'm good and that usually means fireballs. I don't need me no finesse.

My weapon choices whether crafted or a drop are based upon how it enhances my class skills.

    Typically I'm a Templar or a DK.
Sometimes I play my NB but the weapons I use are dual weild, restoration staff, dest staff and sword & Shield in that order.

I may need mana regen so I'll swap to the staff or I may want more SP or some other enchantment and set bonus so I'll swap to dual

Tanking gets interesting cause I may use sword & Sheild and then dest staff

On my NB, its typically dual and dest staff

largely this works for magic based focus for me but there are different strategies for stamina which I vastly do not enjoy.

Just so that everyone knows, my Altmer still can't have black hair. About a dozen of Altmer NPCs in the game have black hair. Just saying.

    Command: Do the thing.

Durza gra-Maghul, Orc blacksmith: The thing was done perfectly, in the most efficient way.
Tegwen, Bosmer troublemaker: You can't prove I didn't do the thing.
Sings-Many-Songs, Argonian fisher: Sure, I'll do the thing... Eventually. Maybe.
Aerindel, Altmer stormcaller: After extensive research, I've come to the conclusion that doing the thing would be a waste of resources.
Liliel, Dunmer pyromancer: Aerindel said I shouldn't do the thing. Something about "resources".
Gyda Snowcaller, Nord cryomancer: I will find a way to do it that won't waste resources and make Aerindel proud of me.
Beatrice Leoriane, Breton vampire: I persuaded someone else into doing the thing. You are welcome, dear.
Sahima, Redguard performer: Doing the thing sounds awfully unpleasant and really not my problem.
Ellaria Valerius, Imperial priestess: I'll pray to the Eight for the thing to be done, if it is Their will.

I don't have a favourite weapon type. The key for me in any MMO is variety, I always have multiple characters equipped differently. Additionally, I may have more than one character with the same weapon type but each will have different builds. As I don't play competitively I'm not concerned with "min-max consequences", I use the weapon(s) appropriate to each character.

I always loved playing dual wield Mage in past TES games, however it just isn't appropriate to use them for anything other than a utility if you want to play magic in this game. Staffs are meh. Would rather just use magic barehanded than carry around a piece of wood.
