I think I may have done something wrong with lvling.

Im only lvl 37 but have been working up clothier and woodworker by doing writs and decon anything I come across that isn’t better than what I have.

The writs I get now are needing mats that I cant even find as they are in lvl zones above my main lvl. Ive had to resort to buying from guild stores but its costing me like 5K gold for 100 bits of fell hide which is way more than I get back from the stuff in the writ.

Same applies to woodworking, its asking for yew items now.

I cant even wer any of the stuff I make as its too high level, even on minimum material requirements. My cloth and wood are around early 20's in level and ive got about 2 or 3 traits researched on most main items so far

What do I do.

    1. You can craft items below your maxed crafting level. So you can still make gear you can wear.
    2. You can respec and take a skill point out of each crafting skill to give you the lower tier writs.
    3. You can head to the next zone to collect mats, while not doing the quests fighting to many mobs etc...
    4. You can simply wait until you get to the next zone, because in that zone you will find the mats you need.

Writs are tied to the main profession passive. To fix them, you can respec you skills and unlock crafting passives only up to your current character level (so up to rank 4 for now). It won't stop you from leveling your skills further as you decon, it'll just ensure that you can keep up with writs.

Thanks guys. When you say 'main profession passive' what do you mean?

    im lvl 37 Templar
woodwork and clothing up to early 20's
passives skilled up only as far as the game lets me (so one or two points in each) higher levls are locked till I get the wood and cloth up to near 30

Ive run ahead into zones above my level to try and find the mats needed but the problem is that ive read that finding mats / mob drops is tied to your main level. As such im not lvl'd up enough somewhere to enable the mats to be found or drop. Im finding mats that suited the previous lot of writs I did.

Do I really need to respec and take some out of my clothier and woodwork passives somewhere? My hirelings are bringing me the appropriate level mats for the writs so I cant be far off?

    really confused.

By "main profession passive" I mean the first passive in each crafting line: Metalworking, Tailoring, Woodworking etc. The more points you put into it, the higher level gear you can craft - of course, you can craft lower level items as well if you have the materials, so you can still make your own armor even if your crafting skills outgrew your character level.

The problem is, as you already noticed, that writs scale to that passive, not to your character level. So even if you're still level 37 and use hickory, if you can craft with yew (mat for lvl 46-50), that's what the writ will ask for. You can prevent this simply by not putting more points in the passives until you're ready.
Other things that scale to the passive are hirelings (which is why you get writ-approprate mats) and, partially, harvest nodes in DLC zones.

Nodes in regular zones do not scale. You can harvest yew, ebony and fell hide with ease in Coldharbor - also in the two earlier zones, but their nodes are far rarer there because most spots are taken by lower level mats.

That's exactly whats happened to me. I guess i'll need to fork out another 700 crown points for a 3rd respec lol

as i suggested in your other post, you would be better off at this stage going to your aliance capital & respecking your skills, concentrate for now on placing points into passives for research & refining, and keep your research slots full at all times, the more traits you have rtesearche dthe better the gear you can craft yourself, 2/3 trait sets can be usefull, in certain circumstances but at level 37 your limited skill points could be better allocated.

forget about writs for now; as you have said yourself you are spending a lot of in game money to purchase materials, to complete writs that give you very little in return

the skill points you will be saving from crafting can then go into class/armour/weapon skiils/morphs and passives. which will help you quest or grind your character to a higher level
the benefit of leveling quicker would be more skill points and access to silver/gold areas that contain skill point quests & skyshards,

you will quickly find that you have a more than enough skill points to put them back into crafting, and by that point you will have more traits researched, which will allow you the oppertunity to make some truly amazing gear for yourself

the stronger your character, the quicker you kill the mobs that drop the leather scraps, or the npcs who are stood close to that ore/cloth/alchemy/enchanting node you want

You pay for respecs with crowns? Madness. You can't possibly have so many skill points at level 37 that respecs for gold are too expensive?

Or if you don't want to go farming higher level mats, maybe just take a break from writs until you gain a few more levels.

i suggested in his last thread on the topic to respec at his alliance capital

I didn't know you could respect 'in game'. how do I do that? I would have saved a fortune

Go to your alliance capital. Wayrest for DC, Eldenroot for AD or Mournhold for EP. There will be a shrine you can go to. You pay gold and you can reset your skills.

Just a quick thanks to those that replied on here. I went to wayrest and reskilled. No idea how but I now have 10 skill points spare after ive put points into the skills I like to use.

Keeping cloth and wood to just lvl 3 has helped hugely. Im now getting writs for mats I have 400+ units of and strangely the supply crates you get back contain some really good stuff.

    Thanks guys.

Nice thing about the Writs, the Gold and Exp rewards scale so doing low level writs on a higher level character is a good deal.

Also, as you have found out, the only things you need to spend points on in crafting while leveling is the Research and possibly the Extraction Passives. The last gives you more mats for decon and refine, and better Temper Return on those activities. But the 3 or 4 points in Research are the most important ones to have. It is also nice to have hirelings, but not at the expense of researching.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.
