Had my first irate grinder encounter

I'm a pve'r and just working through the areas as I lvl up.

Came across a quest area today and two lower lvl players were grinding mobs. One was getting owned quite a lot.

I joined in with heals thinking they needed help. I then got told to 'move away from here'. I ignored them and just continued my quest line. They clearly didn't want me there as any characters I had to kill as part of my quest they just jumped on. I eventually left as my quest took me away but I've never seen that before. Was quite surprised at how defensive people can be over 'their mobs'

it is not uncommon. when i encounter it i just do what i'm there for and move on.

seems strange that people think they can 'own' an area in an mmo.

but dont you realise they are 'professional' grinders and as such do 'own' the area, how dare we think we can interfere with their grinding, by playing the game & doing quests like a noob...

I had that problem back in Coldharbour once. I was doing the quest in the Tower of Lies and was repeatedly told to leave because I was in their grinding zone.

I wasn't even killing anything, I was just doing the quest. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I usually leave them alone to grind themselves to sleep, but for the real obnoxious ones I usually get a few friends together and farm their farm for a bit.

When I am passing through doing a quest, if I get a whisper telling me to leave, I tell them I am just doing the quest be out of here in a sec, if they keep pressing the issue I remind them I paid for the game to, and their names are not on these mobs, that complaining to me has caused me to be in the area longer, most of the ones I encounter were ok with me telling them be out of here in a sec, I have encountered only a couple of real jerks that thought the mobs were exclusive.

Yeah I know lol I had to do a double take when I read the title haha.

I can't say I've encountered this in ESO yet, but I have experienced a similar possessiveness in other MMOs. If it happened to me I would just continue going about my business at my own pace, I definitely wouldn't rush because someone else didn't want me to be there. I remember in another MMO there were these two obnoxious players trying to tell this other guy to get lost because these monsters were theirs. The guy was a tank, so he just goes around taunting as many mobs in the area as he could, he then brings them over to the other two guys (this was perfect timing) and just as one of them does an AOE attack the tank stops taunting all these mobs. Both of the obnoxious players get wiped by all the mobs. Guess they should've been careful what they wished for =p.

Haha I've never had this happen to me in any MMO. Such a sense of entitlement and immaturity. People suck.
  • shauny.gibbsb16_ESO
    You guys!

They may have bern arses or not, I wasn't there, but you're obviously not aware that XP has a 10% buff if grouped but it drops heavily if someone else shares XP from heals/kills

I'll always explain this when someone shows up and be aware if it's a questing area and help them complete it however.

Lol what they were grinding there, 3 or 4 mobs?! I somehow cant remember places with such high mob density in ESO, like huge packs to grind. Probably they came from some Asian MMO with that mentality - if you want to grind up levels go to dungeons.

    @shauny.gibbsb16_ESO

I didn't know that! So if I run in and heal thinking I'm helping, I'm actually reducing their xp?

That gives another outlook on it so can understand that. Still doesn't excuse the ownership of mobs / areas mentality though.

I've run into this before, but only in Cyrodiil. (How dare I interrupt their grinding trying to get the boss kill achievement for the delve and/or AP boost from the boss! </sarcasm> I had to go to Cracked Wood Cave something like four times just to get the boss achievement, because grinders kept killing everything...) If they get obnoxious, report them.

Well, this issue should be relieved with One Tamriel since now you will get full XP off ANY mobs... and there are plenty of reasonable areas to grind in ESO, but the problem currently is when you out-level the mob and are forced to move on. Down side of One Tamriel, this also means some of the most well-known grind locations may become even more over crowded because people won't ever out-level them.

You get that a lot when you're ruining someones raw material loop especially leather scraps. There becomes a mini competition about who can tag every living thing in a 100 meter radius before it dies

I was also once in a group with some guy grinding, when he started to act all monkey over other people grinding around us, and it made me feel so embarrassed...

but thats counter productive if your only interested in scraps, because if you all grouped up, you would all get one anothers loot!

I had this problem near the Vile Laboratory. I saw the quest mark but I couldn't for my life find the quest giver that is on a platform. I kept running around the platform looking for the quest giver (and I killed the mobs on my way as to not get killed myself) and got shouted at by someone who was grinding there.

    Some people are just awful.
Just so that everyone knows, my Altmer still can't have black hair. About a dozen of Altmer NPCs in the game have black hair. Just saying.

    Meet my characters:
    Command: Do the thing.

Zadarri, Khajiit Fist of Thalmor: The thing was done, as commanded.
Durza gra-Maghul, Orc blacksmith: The thing was done perfectly, in the most efficient way.
Tegwen, Bosmer troublemaker: You can't prove I didn't do the thing.
Sings-Many-Songs, Argonian fisher: Sure, I'll do the thing... Eventually. Maybe.
Aerindel, Altmer stormcaller: After extensive research, I've come to the conclusion that doing the thing would be a waste of resources.
Liliel, Dunmer pyromancer: Aerindel said I shouldn't do the thing. Something about "resources".
Gyda Snowcaller, Nord cryomancer: I will find a way to do it that won't waste resources and make Aerindel proud of me.
Beatrice Leoriane, Breton vampire: I persuaded someone else into doing the thing. You are welcome, dear.
Sahima, Redguard performer: Doing the thing sounds awfully unpleasant and really not my problem.
Ellaria Valerius, Imperial priestess: I'll pray to the Eight for the thing to be done, if it is Their will.

The only time I had this happen where they got really rude I told them if they didn't shut up I would run the circle in the reverse direction they were running taking at least half their mobs. I was way over leveled as I was just going back and getting quests I had skipped so I could have wrecked their grinding completely killing mobs before they had a chance to get a hit in.

I got my quest in and was leaving. One of them couldn't help himself and let loose with some profanity. That led to them having about 15 minutes of unproductive grinding and they knew why.

and then the parrot said, "must be the water mines green too."

You know, recently I finally understood how these people feel when they get other players in "their" grinding spots.

I recently found a neat little corner in the Old Orsinium public dungeon where I could farm Rubedo Leather Scraps. Since one of my characters is a Stamblade I'm in need of Leather, so I developed a little system of going between this group of Hagravens and Harpies, to this group of Harpies, to this group of Echatere ect. My usual time spent gives me about 200 to 300 pieces before I leave. One day a group of two or three is in there as well and they're obviously doing the same thing, and their route cuts into mine, though It didn't even seem like they had a route, but more like they just killed whatever they ran into.

I started to get so ticked when they would pull half of "my" group of Echatere away, or would take down a large group of "my" Harpies while I wasn't there so I didn't get the drops. Then I laughed hard cause I realized how those people felt.

I like zone chat most of the time. Just for kicks sometimes I start in Glenumbra and try to do a good deed then move on to the next zone and do one seeing how far I get through all the zones before it is time to do something else. I wouldn't be able to help people if I couldn't see zone chat.

Being on the PC EU server I have English Zone chat enabled and Zone chat disabled. I'm not totally anti-social, but I can do without all the trade offers and guild recruitment that normally ruin public chat channels for me.

Honestly, I only get pissed off when people are grinding with me, and NOT PULLING MOBS CORRECTLY. They will pull like 1 or 2 at a time, then kill them, and move on. IDC if you're grinding with me or doing the quest, but if you are grinding, follow the group and do it correctly

I've never had it happen to me. But, I did get even with a grinder in WereWolf form. They would gather the mobs and dispatch them quickly -- basically preventing others partaking. So, I transformed and starting using the howl that scares mobs and causes them to run in fear --- dispersing the cluster. :)

When I get salty messages like that from grinders regarding "their area", I disrupt their rotation and kill everything.

Same happened to me in Riften. Guy was farming sabrecats presumably for shadowhide. He asked me why I was ruining his pulls. I asked him why he was ruining my quest and told him he didn't own Tamriel. I found it very arrogant. Not gonna lie, it really got under my skin.
