In starwas galaxies (pre-NGE) even your toon got fatigued when fighting and you had to pay a visit to the local entertainers to /watch or /listen to them to loose the battle fatigue.
Repairing armor or weapons you had a slight chance the item was destroyed in the process
I also played mmo's (age of conan) where armor did not need repairs at all.
But as i said, TESO's system is not that bad. I do wish i could craft repairkits myself so i could use them on my armor when it's broke. But since i only PvP, i haven't had broken armor in years. (i do intend to try dungeons soon so might change opinion after that)

"I am a nightblade. Blending the disciplines of the stealthy agent and subtle wizard, I move unseen and undetected, foil locks and traps, and teleport to safety when threatened, or strike like a viper from ambush. The College of Illusion hides me and fuddles or pacifies my opponents. The College of Mysticism detects my object, reflects and dispels enemy spells, and makes good my escape. The key to a nightblade's success is avoidance, by spell or by stealth; with these skills, all things are possible."
I like durability mechanics, but the one in ESO is incredibly lame and poorly thought. They should remove the portion that degrades armor when experience is gained but keep the portion that degrades items on death. They obviously can't base it on damage taken otherwise nobody would want to be a tank.
Also it's pretty stupid that weapons are excluded from the mechanic because in a real scenario weapons would break far faster than armor.
