Am i just completely oblivious? (About Maelstrom Arena)

I always thought that the Arena reset when you left, but i just got on after a couple hours of frustration and low and behold, I'm at the area where I left off! If anyone could tell me if this was always a thing or when it changed, i would appreciate it.

You need to abandon the quest actually.

It resets the stage if you go outside the arena for a long time (not sure how long exactly), but not back to the very start of the arena. So if you got up to the boss round of Seht's Balcony for example, then left the arena for a few hours and came back, you'd be put back to stage 1 of Seht's Balcony and would have to fight your way back up to the boss from there.

You need to abandon the quest and leave the arena for ~10-15 minutes. Doing both of these will allow you to start completely fresh.

It is treated as a quest and you can re-enter at the level where you left off. If you do this, the run will not count towards the leader boards for the event but it means that you can actually go back and finish it without having to do it all in one sitting.

You only need to abandon it and restart from the beginning if you want to.

The stage which you had just left is automatically saved and you will return to that same level when you continue. Otherwise, like previous posting, you can abandon it entirely and go through the waiting period to restart from the beginning. In normal Maelstrom, it is ok to continue on the stage which was saved from where you had previously left off. Completing a no death run or no save run on normal Maelstrom is not going to give you any better loot or achievement. However, in veteran Maelstrom or vMA, you would have to abandon and restart from the beginning each time you die to get the no-death and no save achievement run of the flawless conqueror title and to get more points towards getting on the leader board.

To actually answer your question, normal Maelstrom Arena would not reset your progress, but Veteran Maelstrom Arena used to reset your progress. This was changed a few months back and now both normal and veteran will save your progress unless you abandon the quest.

Note though, that in order to qualify for the leaderboards for Veteran mode you can not leave the arena. However you still are eligible for chest drops in the arena itself, even if you leave and complete it later.
