    How?

You are forced to play the way that is defined by other players.

RP is easy under level 50 as long as you don't do any grouping, but God forbid you want to group. Then you MUST be exactly what they define you to be or suffer the consequences.

I do. I act in character in /say, and I still speak a little differently on other channels depending on the character I am playing as. Other than that, I roleplay with some friends as I am not in a RP guild right now, and we have our little story line.
Just so that everyone knows, my Altmer still can't have black hair. About a dozen of Altmer NPCs in the game have black hair. Just saying.

    Meet my characters:
    Command: Do the thing.

Zadarri, Khajiit Fist of Thalmor: The thing was done, as commanded.
Durza gra-Maghul, Orc blacksmith: The thing was done perfectly, in the most efficient way.
Tegwen, Bosmer troublemaker: You can't prove I didn't do the thing.
Sings-Many-Songs, Argonian fisher: Sure, I'll do the thing... Eventually. Maybe.
Aerindel, Altmer stormcaller: After extensive research, I've come to the conclusion that doing the thing would be a waste of resources.
Liliel, Dunmer pyromancer: Aerindel said I shouldn't do the thing. Something about "resources".
Gyda Snowcaller, Nord cryomancer: I will find a way to do it that won't waste resources and make Aerindel proud of me.
Beatrice Leoriane, Breton vampire: I persuaded someone else into doing the thing. You are welcome, dear.
Sahima, Redguard performer: Doing the thing sounds awfully unpleasant and really not my problem.
Ellaria Valerius, Imperial priestess: I'll pray to the Eight for the thing to be done, if it is Their will.

I currently role play a redguard stamplar who was told by his doctor that repeatedly crouching over the corpses of his foes would ensure excellent leg health for years to come. Its hard to jab a spear in people when you have bad legs so he does his physical therapy religiously.

I mean, I have a backstory of my character inside my head and I quest being all sneaky and stuff, but I guess you are referring to play by your character (speak in 3rd person if you are a khajit for instance) then nope, I do not

Well, everyone plays a role, in or out of game...

All my characters have some backstory. Some are more fleshed out than others. All of them have their own personalities.

I have not run into many (any) other roleplayers, so most of my imagination is used on quest and skill choices.

I roleplay as a skeleton occasionally. It's a rough life being a skeleton you know, people won't give you a chance, you gotta steal to make your way and everyone wants to fight you because you're grinning all the time.

I do role play, but it might not be what others understand when they think of role play - I am not talking in character and out of character for example. Role play to me is to immerse into my character and look at the world from his/her perspective. And shape his/her future accordingly to their experiences. For that I do not have to try to play Hamlet or Macbeth and act like I would be an actor - which is about what most, I guess, understand when they role play - I want to see and view the world from the perspective of the role my character experiences - not even "plays", experiences is the better term for what I mean.

I am role playing for this experience, and not to act in the role like an actor would in a Shakespearean play.

Edit: I will give an example - my characters are not much into crime per se - but circumstances and their tendency to not bow to a guild dogma forces them to break the laws sometimes - they do it reluctantly still, but the longer it lasts, the more they get corrupted by it and they get a tendency to break the law more and more often and in the end they might end up as professional criminals. So far they are just amateurs and they really suck at it. So there is still a chance, that they might not glide into a totally criminal life - but the tendency is there.

    No roleplay, but fan fiction...yes.

    Oh YES!!!

Er... I may have written one or two things myself.
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.
    ***
Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis

    How do I roleplay?

I give my characters distinct personalities, and realistic looking armor- I want them to be realistic, flawed, and interesting in their own right.

I may simply join others in a tavern for an evening, slipping into conversations, but often what is the most fun is completely forgetting all about who my character is, where they are, and what they're doing, and go out into the world, explore. Find the story of the world rather than the story of my character within it.

Roleplaying could mean just walking through the fields of Cyrodiil, taking your time even though the danger of other players is ever present, to view nature, and hear the stories that it has to tell.

(though I don't mind if I get jumped- there's little better than a duel in the middle of Cyrodiil)

No disrespect, but the overall thread is a dumb question, since anyone playing the game is technically role-playing. If you're playing a character that is not your actual self, you are role-playing. Those saying no are in denial.

Khajiit has occasionally passed herself off as a respectable sober one with no interest in the contents of the pockets.

Otherwise Khajiit is a little confused by the question.

Does talking to the enemy zerg who cannot hear you because you didn't attached mic counts?

    I'd say so.

cussing at the enemy is a longstanding tradition - and what with there being minimal allowance for cross-faction communication, many of us are not heard

But someday I long to lean over the parapet and shout to the hapless masses below:
