let me get this straight...you say we need Trials Gear in order to do Trials...do you see anything odd in your logic here?

If you want to optimize your group yes. But ofcourse it is also possible to complete those WITHOUT those sets.

You can farm those set in normal version of the trials (that are totally doable) and when you have those, you could work on veteran ones.
