Feature idea: Let us change the appearance of items

In Guild Wars 2 it's called item transmutation. Basically you make one item look like another, for aesthetic purposes.

With all these set items and such out there it would be nice if we could transmute a different appearance onto them. Crown of the Lich would be a nice looking helmet to have, for instance. That's the one that looks like King Laloriaran Dynar's. There's a lot of low-ish level armor appearances as well that would be nice at high level.

As for incentive for ZOS putting in the work, I'm sure they could be in the form of some kind of transmutation stone or some such available in the crown store.

    AGREED!
Let us "upgrade" our lower level stuff, I'd re-do my homespun to keep the look.
It could be another tab on the crafting, pick the item, choose the higher level material you want it upgraded to, & presto!

Changing one unique set to look like another set? No.

But choosing the appearance of a crafted item based on it's Level quality? Such as making a CP160 piece looking like it's Level 5 counterpart? I can get on board with that.

My favorite combo atm (for female) is bosmer top, breton boots, argonian rest - for level 20 materials. Here's some old screens:

So you wanted to look like you are coming home from the gym and not be in a fantasy game?

So you wanted to look like you are coming home from the gym and not be in a fantasy game?

What's not fantasy about it? In a Medeival setting such as Tamriel full body clothing that aren't rags would only be accessible by the wealthy/fortunate. Most would settle for the bare necessities.

You're placing your modern day perspective on a Medeival people. You make it sound like the people of Tamriel have Gym memberships.

I would love to have something like this. It's really frustrating to get an item with perfect stats which looks ugly (or a really cool looking item with stats I can't use). It would also solve the problem with being unable to dye weapons and being stuck with ones with silly, unrealistic colours (like a bright red sword).

I've thought about this a lot before and there are 3 ways I can see it working:

    Crafting

Just like we can currently research an item to learn to craft it's trait we could research items to learn to craft ones that look like that. Crafting styles would be unlocked when you get that motif, and others would be unlocked by obtaining an item with that style and researching it. Then crafting something with that appearance would use a related material in place of the racial material.

    Transmutation

This is like the system WoW has (I think) and Guild Wars 2 used to have. You obtain two items - one with the stats you want and one with the appearance you want (and obviously they have to match - e.g. two swords, not a sword and an axe) and then use a 3rd 'magical' item to combine them. It destroys the original two and gives you one item with the stats and appearance you've chosen.

    Convert to...

This is probably the easiest to implement but IMO the most boring. Just like players with the Imperial Edition currently have the option to right-click an item and convert it to the Imperial style you'd have the option to convert it to any style you've unlocked by previously obtaining an item with that appearance.

The only protection the armor provides is protection from the people who want to use it on them in the first place lol.

A Transmogrification system to change armor appearance would truly be appreciated.

It could be a new perk for master crafters, put some skillpoints into it at reacing 50 in craft skills, and then you get access to a new option on your crafting stations that allows you to reforge/resew/recarve existing pieces into new visuals, any style you have learned, requiring additional resources, and with a destruction chance just like temper improvements, that can be migrated by using more resources...

One skill point could allow you to change your gear into any style learned, a second skill point could also allow to change to level-mismatching visuals, like giving that CP160 shoulder piece low-level breton looks, or change that endgame rubedite-red sword into steel blade visuals...

I'd probably be happy with just about any implementation as long as it let me change the appearance of dropped & monster set items and not just crafted items.
