really excited to have a way to communicate to all guild member with out having to drag people to chat, will make trial and group organisation a breeze. really happy its going to start feeling like an mmo. And less voice clutter is always good.

I hope that my character name displays on the chat box and I'm not forced to have my Gamertag display only.

I get some people are shy, don't like guilds or voice chat. And this this is awesome for them. I for one will not go into it! And would be disappointed if it was not a toggle as its a waste of space on the screen reading CAPS LOCKED RANTs strangers.

Honestly, to each their own really. I have issues getting a lot of people to ever come into guild chat, and every one i ask has different reasons: no money to buy a mic, loud kids and not wanting to subject others to that, etc, etc, etc. Actually shyness is only a small part of the problem. A vast majority of the time, that i see, the person doesn't want to voice chat due to social anxiety. I have one friend who has social anxiety so bad it would send her heart racing to talk in voice chat. Text is fine, she can handle that. But literally she would only ever voice chat with me because i know how she feels having a touch of it myself, and the fact my mum has it and everything, so she was only ever comfortable talking to me in voice chat. So honestly, i think text chat is going to be huge for my guild, for these very reasons. Not to mention it will make recruiting a crap ton easier. You can't recruit worth a damn in stupid proximity chat, and i have personally never seen recruiting in area chat actually work, and i do not run around sending random people invites, because for one, i know personally how annoying that is. So what does that leave? Forums. Which barely works half the time. Recruiting through text ZONE chat will be a crap ton easier.

But like i said, to each their own. Everyone's situation is totally different.

Ever since ESO came out on consoles (possibly shortly before) we've had regular topics with dozens of people insisting the game needs text chat, they can't believe it's not in already, it's a core feature that any MMO needs and it doesn't matter if it's on consoles, voice-only doesn't work etc. etc.

Now you're getting it and it seems like all those people have disappeared and all we've got is people who are angry it's being added and planning to turn it off immediately and never, ever use it as some kind of protest.

Can anyone or someone at zeni confirm that our character names will be displayed on the chat box and not our console ID if we preferred our names in the settings.
I really hope so, that would be a huge dissapointment if my console ID was to be displayed on the chat box only.

. Im not turning it off in any form of protest, I get people want it, and they will be stoked. I was responding to the view of not getting WHY I wouldnt want it, I can do all I need to without is all im saying.

But most importantly I personally want to be able to turn it off. It would annoy me to lose the already busy screen estate and just be spammed by strangers. I love real interaction in MMO which I get plenty enough of, real interaction. I guess in the same way all my real mates have me on Whatsapp, and all the rest are on FB spamming away

So in short, the fact it is off by default, happy days for all. Those that want it can have it, those that don't can have it switched off. Winner winner. Those with it on need to understand that not everyone will have it on, thus the other methods of communicating are still key. And I still think for proper cohesion in the way I play Text Chat wont help, For me, each to their own tho bro!

Meh. I plan on disabling it. I don't need a scrolling crapfest of spam on my screen.

Text chat could be useful. But as you've stated it will most likely be mostly spam. In majority of games I play with text chat, it is 99.9% complete spam or creepy dudes trying to hit on people via video games.

As long as they implement it this way, as I'm not on PC so I don't know how PC's chat is set up.
Text chat would useful imo for finding individuals in guilds for grouping. It can be a pain to jump into voice chat with a load of people who are talking and try to look for certain roles for grouping.

I played WOW and we had text based chat but we're on computers and keyboards. I am used to voice chat now on Xbox so do not plan on using text chat. Combat happens much to quickly to have to stop and type.
