Crowns are currently on sale until 8/9. I believe you can get 5500 crowns for under $24 US.

For the record the Motifs come with Crown Mimic Stones. At least the Ancient Elf one did when I bought it for one of my alts. He wanted a Staff made from it and my Woodworker hadn't found that Motif yet.

Fair warning, if you're on the PC, older motifs are actually quite cheap. (These prices are going to be estimates from PC-NA)

Ancient Elf, Daedric, Barbaric, and Primal run between 1k and 5k these days. You can find them for sale at guild kiosks if you're persistent.

Dwemer will set you back around 2k a page (so about 28k total).

Glass will set you back around 10-20k a page.

Xyvkin runs around 2-4k per page. Though chests and swords might run you more.

Mercenary is very cheap. Figure less than 20k to put together an entire set. (Probably less than 10k honestly.)

Alliance styles usually start at around 5k, and can get as high as 20k for a page.

Other motifs will run you more per page. Right now the highest cost ones are going to be Dark Brotherhood, Minataur, Order of the Hour, and (by a huge margin) Dro'Mathra (which starts at around 70k a page).

In most cases you can buy style mats for whatever you're making. Do some research first, before buying mimic stones.

Also, some of the early styles have skill line prerequisites. So if you're fresh off the boat, and wanting to craft Daedric, you won't be able to use the non-crown style books. (You need to have 9/10 for one of the equipment skill lines).

Very comprehensive post by Starkerealm. As has been suggested, the only real advantages to the crown motifs are, one, the instant gratification, and two, the lack of skill requirements so you can make yourself some Level 4 Iron armor in a Glass motif if you really really wanted to.

Personally, I wait for motif prices to come down, and focus on the pieces I want for my look (ESO Fashion can help here, but they aren't updated as frequently as one would like).

Well I might go ahead and get the glass or ebonheart style today since crowns are on sale. And I'm 10/10 in everything so no worries about that lol

You must be rolling in dough if you can afford to drop even 5000 discounted crowns for a motif for one character. I have every motif but the most recent, and never spent a crown. Spent a bit of gold, but bargains are out there on nearly every motif. The motifs cost more than DLC, which doesn't make since to me. If you can afford to buy them with crowns, I'm a bit jealous.
