Large Stolen Shipments & Bounties

It seems fairly silly that opening the large stolen shipments you get from Thieves Troves should garner a bounty. I highly doubt that the guard knows to look out for a box of 10 chamber pots that didn't make it to their destination. Or worse yet, how can the guards accuse me of stealing from my own inventory? It just doesn't make any sense.

On a related note, Indaenir in the Verrant Morass will give you a bounty (even though he won't leave you alone, as he's trying to give you the quest) when you loot the Thieves Trove there.

Open those away from other npcs to not rack up a bounty.

I was definitely surprised the first time I opened one near a guard. No real way of knowing if that would happen till it happens.

Yes, I'm quite aware of *how* to avoid it. My point is merely that after you've stolen the shipment you shouldn't have to once again steal its contents.

Is that written down somewhere? I must have missed the part where it said that everything would make sense and operate just as it would in the real world. I did however read that opening a large stolen bag could attract the attention of the guards if done outside the bandits refuge. As for the thieves troves, of course you got a bounty. You stole from it in front of somebody. The thieves troves are not marked "take" They are marked "steal from" so if you loot it when in view of a thief there are consequences.

That's just a gameplay mechanic though. Realistically, there is no way that a guard could identify some of the items you pick up as being stolen. Although, it would be amusing if they did. "I recognize those grapes and animal guts! Those were my neighbor's, thief!".

Yes, indeed they marked "Steal From." Though, for example, if you're stealing in Riften, the NPC who's trying to give you a quest will sneak behind you as you go and won't report you to the guards. I'm merely suggesting similar behavior for this NPC who, currently, will ALWAYS give you a bounty whenever you steal from that specific trove, unless you've already finished the quest.

Dude... These guards are GODS, they know everything. I once stole an apple in Khenarthi's Roost and 3 minutes later a guard in Alik'r Desert had already learned of my crime and was waiting for me to walk past him.

Right after TG dropped, we used to get nailed for opening those shipments while in the Refuge.....

...IIRC, the stolen shipments literally have something along the lines of "This might cause trouble if you open it in public" right in the description. That might be considered a way of knowing.
    Living vicariously through my characters.

    My Girls:
"If you were trapped in your house for, say, a year, how would you pass the time?"

Nephikah the Houseless, dunmer assassin: "I suppose I could use the break. I have a lot of business holdings now that need management."
Swum-Many-Waters, elderly argonian healer: "I think that I would enjoy writing a memoir."
Silh'ki, khajiit warrior-chef: "Would this one be able to go outside, to the nearby river? It's hard to fish without water!"
Peregrine Huntress, bosmer hunter: "Who is forcing me to stay inside, and where can I find them?"
Lorenyawe, altmer mechanist: "And why would I want to go outside in the first place? Too much to be done in the workshop."
Lorelai Magpie, breton master thief: "I'd go nuts. Lucky for me, I have a little experience sneaking out!"
Rasheda the Burning Heart, redguard knight: "I would continue my training to keep my skills sharp."
Hex-Eye Azabi, khajiit daedric priestess: "I suppose it would be lucky, then, that I built a shrine to Mephala in my backyard."
Yngva Stormhammer, nord bandit (reformed...ish): "I hate being inside even when I'm not forced to be. GET. ME. OUT."
Madam Argentia, vampire dunmer aristocrat: "I suppose it would be more of the same. I have a rather... contentious relationship with the sun."
Mazie gra-Bolga, orc scout: "Uh... I'd have to house train my bear..."
Felicia the Wanderer, imperial witch-for-hire: "What Lorelai said."
Calico Jaka-dra, retired khajiit pirate: "This one would like a rest from her grand adventures. Her jewel shop runs out of stock!"
Shimmerbeam, blind altmer psijic: "Provided that I am confined to Artaeum, I do not think I will want for things to occupy my time."
Shauna Blackfire, redguard necromancer: "Sounds like paradise. I hate people."
Kirniel the Undying, cursed bosmer warrior: "I would feel useless, not being able to fight."
Echoes-from-Dragons, argonian who thinks she's a dragon: "All the better to count my hoard!"

(Signature idea shamelessly stolen from Abeille.)

    .

    Sorry but... wrong...

What doesn't make sense is LARGE STOLEN SHIPMENTS period.

Why have them as a container within a container that i then have to open later AT ALL???

That is wasting my gaming time.

The reasons for containers within the game that make sense are:
Putting multiple types of items in one inventory slot (liike provision packs or potion satchels)
Putting "only one carried" items in there (like surveys in enchanter packs)
Putting items that will scale later when you open them (like daily delve rewards)

But these shipments dont do any of those. All they do is provide 10 or fewer of a stacking loot.

there is no reason at all to have these as "boxes within boxes" and it remains inconvenient.

heck, troves even have the "only one in inventory" items like treasure maps that ARE NOT IN these boxes within boxes" so they have the mechanics to allow you to empty the trove always but choose not to use it.

    Wastes my time...

    Mildly annoys me.

    Not the bounty chance...

    the time...

    for no reason.

    YMMV

STEVIL, Isn't that part of the game which you can just skip if it isn't to your taste? I mean, really, game time is yours to spend as you wish, isn't it? Is what you want just to fly through whacking things and being given the other odds and ends of stuff that is available without having to go through the game process? It's a Role Playing Game. It may be many other things too but as an RPG some things are expected and one of them is a process to acquire stuff beyond dropped loot. I just don't understand the mindset of some players, I really don't. It's like the ones who complain about having to sneak in Thieves Guild because they just aren't into stealth.

So it wouldn't cause the guards to look into a shady character opening a LARGE SHIPPING CRATE in the middle of town?

Just open them in an outlaw refuge, no one is caring there for you opening the box. This way it will as well not litter your inventory as long as you are out there "collecting".
