Some days I just want to pop in and take care of a few things, but don't want to be rude and ignore friends or guild mates. Is there a way to do this?

✭All it does is mark you as offline to place you with other offline people if the order shown is activity but if people scroll down to your name they will see your character name and will know you are online. I caught @Red_Psylocke in his pseudo offline mode oncePS4 NA

Yep, just pop in, do your things and log out. Its not like you have to say hi to everyone when you log in.Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.
