Crashing! Error: "Display Driver Stopped Responding and Has Recovered"

This game seems to cause an extremely large number of crashes on my system. Sometimes it's once every couple of hours, other times it's multiple times within minutes of each other. Most of the time I receive an error that says, "Display Driver Stopped Responding and Has Recovered" before I can get back to my desktop to restart the application. Other times it completely locks up my system and I need to restart the entire box. It's incredibly frustrating tbh and my biggest complaint with this game. This is literally the only game I have problems with. I'm fairly certain it's not my system, but i'm asking anyways in hopes that someone knows what is going on and if anyone that has had this problem as well knows what is causing it and how to fix it. Thank you in advance for all responses received!

EDIT: Almost forgot to mention I am using the Steam version of the game if that makes a difference. Bought it during the recent Steam sale.

Which GPU exactly you have? Is it factory boosted? Factory clocked? Have you clocked it?

I listed the GPU above. It is a AMD Radeon R9 380. I don't remember if I had it factory overclocked or not when I ordered it. I have not overclocked it on my own though I do know.

There may be some information on the body of the GPU itself. It's just ESO seems to have some conflict with OCd cards. You'll want to try all the conventional steps like downloading newest drivers and deleting the UserSettings.txt file.
After that you may want to try to underclock your card some 50-100 Mhz see if that helps.
I really doubt ZOS will address your issue. They tried to solve it for several people (including me) but it seems no one really knows what's it all about. Since then they've been ignoring pretty much everyone with same problem for some time.

This same problem pops up periodically for me too.

Today for example... Friday evening.. have all night to game...but out of nowhere... crashing.

    Updated driver.. and still crashing...

Good luck. Last time, my problems randomly went away just as they had appeared....

check for another driver update, amd released "Crimson Edition 16.7.2 Hotfix" yesterday which i'm going to test out

and it shouldn't hurt to try the TdrDelay 8 windows registry edit (that link is for windows 7 but i guess windows 10 is similar)

    [EDIT]
tested and hasn't fixed my issues, hope you have better luck if you try them.

Usually when you get a TDR ( Timeout Detection and Recovery ) it's because Windows has detected your card wasn't responding.

While it CAN be related to software it is usually related to one of 2 things.

Lack of Amps in the 12v rail on the PSU ( the card when on full load doesn't get enough power , thus fails , windows detects it and to avoid a crash it TDRs )

The card isn't stable ( sadly , as e1team has pointed out , a lot of factory OC cards aren't stable @ full load, and actually need more voltage to be safe @ those mhz )

The solution for this is to do exactly as e1team pointed out and downclock your card ( better to downclock than to mess with the voltages ).

Check the 12v rail Amps on the PSU ( I would recommend 30Amps for a 380 ) , If you have anough Amps and the PSU isn't the issue try to downclock the card a little and check if it makes it stable.

(some people recommend altering the timeout time, I wouldn't recommend this, TDR is windows saving you from a crash, the TDR error itself ( Driver has stopped responding ) is windows detecting a problem and recovering from the ACTUAL crash )

edit: Also check your temps , probably not related to the issue, but it's not hard to check it using HWmonitor or Msi Afterburner ( or any similar tool ).

I'm at wit's end. Just had 4 crashes back to back. I've tried pretty much everything and it's not working. I did some further searching and found another article where someone said they found a workaround by setting shadow quality to off. Going to try that and see if it works next. If all else fails I'll open a support ticket to ZOS and if that doesn't work i'll be cancelling my ESO Plus sub and trying to refund via Steam. This is total BS.

Have you tried downclocking your GPU? Seems to work for me for now *knocks on the wood*
