Do I just suck, or are Heists pretty hard to finish within the time limit?

That is exactly that what the shadowdancer set in thief troves offers as well.

I've been stealing and finding troves everywhere lol. I'm trying to avoid heists for the time being. Finding troves is like finding books for the mages guild. Really hard and it doesn't raise your experience with the guild a ton

The biggest problem with heists is the lantern holders. Some of them are very inconveniently placed and make it very difficult even by NB standards to get it without getting caught, unless you just force locks. Also there is only ONE heist with the objective to collect several items without picking locks while the rest require lockpicking. I think that alone needs to be addressed for more objective balance. I also honestly think you should be able to maintain a level of stealth WHILE picking a lock. Also the lantern guards in certain places stand idle far too long and force us to waste almost half a minute waiting for them to move so we can get by.

For me the problem with heists is that in some of them you get instantly detected when trying to pick a lock (even if there no one near you) or disarm a trap. Maybe it a bug, dont know.
Lantern guys are annoying and slow, but theyre not as annoying as instant detection when trying to open a chest.

I had problems with the time limit too until I crafted a set which let me ignore movement speed penalty while sneaking. It helped a lot! I also use the legerdemain passive which gives me 85% change to force lock so I don't need to use precious time to pick them.

I have done them all on my dk, as above use nights silence, rapids, invisibility speed potions.
    You learn the mechanics eventually

Heists should have a challenge to them to get the bonus loot. They are not hard but require decent planning and little finesse.

Use the Night's Silence set when heisting, the speed bonus when sneaking helps a lot.

This is the key right here. I run a stamblade full medium but have a set of 5 night's silence in my "ninja gear" set. I slap that baby on for all heists, sacraments, and tip board jobs. You can just stroll around without any speed taken away while stealthed.

When you do a vet dungeon or a trial hard mode, you don't expect to pull your share of DPS or heal without proper adequate sets, do you ?

Why do you expect heists to be doable without proper stealth radius reduction sets, another set to sustain walking speed while in stealth, potion cooldown reduction jewelry, invisibility/speed pots... ? That's the kind of gear you need. It's widely available in guild stores. If you don't have it, don't complain heists are too hard. Same applies to lockpicking : just invest the damn skill points and be done with it.

Besides, heists require learning some mechanics just like dungeons do.

Dont bother doing most of them on anything but a Nightblade with cloak. I always miss by at least 30 seconds because I cant stealth past the damn lantern carriers and the NPCs stand there for too damn long and just eat time away.

Ive manage to do 2 out of about 10 so far on my DK. Complete waste of time on anything but a NB

I really want the full set of motifs for my crafter but this is making it extremely frustrating and painful to get.
Seriously, I would like to play some of my other characters in some of the other areas of the game, including the 4 new ones I made with the new character slots, but all I do is these damn heists and tip boards 24/7 trying to get motifs. The game has just become a huge non stop motif farm.

Motif farm is your choice, not a must.

As to heists... I do them every day on my 3 chars, among which only 1 is a nightblade. Admittedly, cloaking does make things easier.
The two other chars must be more patient, appropriately geared, and cautious. But they succeed everyday just as well.

Its the only way to get them without farming tons of gold. Im not going to spend 30 K for one lousy page. Either way its just non stop farming and Im getting tired of having to farm my brains out for everything in this game. If you dont do them every day youll never get them. As it is it takes forever. Im getting my 3 NB ready to do these since they are apparently easy mode for them.

Yes they are not easy by yourself, they can be done but are deigned to be group content.

If you don't have a NB or a vampire, craft yourself some v15 nights silence it works wonders in medium if you can.

If you have the skill points medium armor passive a and ledgermain passive a reducing sneaking cost are very helpful.

Invisibility positions are very helpful but you have to stay out of he detection circles or you waste them.

If you get spotted one time it's pretty much not going to happen in the time limit.

Heists, don't seem to encourage actual careful, sneaky play. it seems to encourage more of a sprint while spamming Dark Cloak kind of "stealth", until you see the Lamp Guards.

I'm waiting for the Guard with the lamp to move so I can sneak past him, and time is ticking down, and I'm just like "MOVE, GET OUTTA MY WAY ALREADY." and it takes the guy like 20-25 seconds to get far enough away for me to jump out of the basket and haul ass to the next one. that 20 seconds is precious man. especially since if you get seen for even a split-second you lose like half of your time(it seems).

any hints to help me more reliably complete these without having to constantly abandon and start over?

Don't talk nonsense. What you say is simply not true. For the first few weeks after DB I did the heists daily on my Altmer Sorc, Dunmer DK, Argonian Templar and Redguard DK to farm motifs. No Nightblade here, yet 100% success rate.

Get adequate gear and skills (already covered here and in other threads, I won't bother with repeating), learn the maps, practice the tactics. I almost always finished with 3+ minutes left on the timer, best heist was about 5:50 left (i.e. done in under 2 mins). Again, no Nightblade.

I am usually ok with the heists, but yesterday I attempted to do one with a friend, together, drunk... It took us 4 attempts in the end to complete it, but the laughs were well worth the trauma of it

I find it easier without groups. But that's probably because the people I tend to group with follow me footstep for footstep, providing absolutely no benefit, and regardless of the fact I'm invisible and they're not.

But back to the topic at hand, heists are tough.

A lot tougher than the sacraments.

I'm now at a point where I can get perfect runs maybe 4-5 days out of a week, but that is after a lot of trial and error.

I guess for me the key was understanding that 8 minutes is actually a lot longer than it sounds.

    I don't have to rush.

Don't risk getting caught to save 10-15 seconds to wait for the guard to leave.

The last few runs I've done them with 3-4 minutes to spare, and that was being cautious (but also knowing the levels well and after a hell of a lot of trial and error).

Take your time & keep running them is the best advice I can offer.
