You think 3 trait research takes a long time???????? Don't be trying to go for Twice Born Star. ..start now and you may finish by the end of the year.

9 traits in all armor and weapons types here. Yeah, good thing I played since beta...

Re: unique appearances. Something I've noticed is that in addition to the overall look changing slightly at different levels (Breton light armor helmets don't get the face mask part until around level 36 for example), there are also subtle differences in the way dyes work at different levels and qualities.

For example, Cold Harbor Ash Black looks REALLY black on Xivkyn light at cp160 gold quality. Yet at cp150 purple quality it just looks sort of dull grey.

So there is a bit of "character" to gear beyond the style you use.

Of course every aspiring crafter should bookmark this page:

Lucid comment Burning_Talons .... such a great contribution to the thread. Obviously, you missed the point of it.

@TheDuck I got that you didnt know what the difference between a costume and a crafted set was. Bravo

Dont get salty over a comment

@Burning_Talons This is a new player here, dude. It is pretty normal not to know some things right from the start. Your sarcasm is misplaced.

Dont justify the troll. Simple Google search would have saved the OP from looking foolish. Common sense really, if you can post on the forums than a Google search isn't out of the question.

So simply asking a question, rather than being an all knowing game geek is a bad thing?
My apologies, I have other things to do besides devote all my time to understanding every aspect of a game.

I did a Google search, with no specific results, so if I look foolish for asking a simple question, I guess thats just life.

Some of you have serious issues you need to work out.

Thanks to everyone who gave answers, I appreciate it.

If that's your case then 50% of this forum no longer needs to function surely...or did I get mistaken that it's just for crying nerf RO and buff sorc shields?

It would be awesome if the crafted sets had some specific style associated with them that you could craft without needing a stone, but also have the option of using any style you've learned. Like, Night's Silence was default TG style, Night Mother's Gaze DB style, Host Bark - Argonian, Kvatch Gladiator - Minotaur... Etc... Dropped sets have specific styles they show up as, figure there should be an iconic style for the crafted ones as well, just also allow crafters to ignore them and use their own styles if they want as well.

No Danny, I understand the Styles.

I saw pics online of some really sweet Seducer gear, but maybe they were Photoshopped images. Or beta, who knows.

you do realize there is more styles then the one you have right?

That's the dark seducer costume . It's not gear.

Technically it is also available as gear from a very rare dolmen drop. I forget what the name is. But, yeah, that's the costume there.

Yet, after waiting through the ludicrously long "research" times, I find the Seducer gear looks no different from "normal" crafted gear.

    My disappointment is legendary.

You don't understand legendary disappointment until you've crafted Armor Master.

There is only Lich and Drugar Heritage sets. They look nothing like them. Most likely OP saw someone talking about an armour set they crafted and mentioned seducer...so unless he looks through all the pics of armour set styles he'll never know.

From what I understand, and have seen, the dyes don't actually replace the underlying color channel, at least not in most cases. They overlay it. For some dyes, especially rares, it doesn't matter, because the dye will wipe everything out. With common and uncommon dyes that doesn't happen, or at least, not often.

Also, the basic rule with overall appearance is this:

With the basic 9 motifs and imperial, there are 5 visual tiers. In most cases the first four are the only ones that are accessible. Abnur Tharn wears pieces of tier 5 imperial light armor, for example.

The tiers correspond to the materials used. So, for blacksmithing, Iron is tier 1, steel is tier 2, orichalcum is tier 3, dwarven is tier 4. Tier 5 visuals are very rare, and almost never appear on player accessible items. Usually, you'll see tier 5 items in the hands of major NPCs. Anything crafted with Ebony or higher will use tier 4 visuals.

The materials used, and the quality of the item (white -> green -> blue -> purple -> gold) controls the native colors of the item.

For the basic racial motifs, your armor and weapons have different visuals for each tier. So tier 1 armor looks different from tier 4. Or, as you pointed out, Breton light armor picks up a face mask at tier 3 or 4 (I forget which).

For rare motifs (like Daedric, Primal, Ancient Elf, Barbaric, and Dwemer), there are still four tiers of weapons, but there is only one visual tier for armor. Dwemer armor crafted at level 3 will look the same (except for the colors) as V16 armor of the same type. However, the weapons will become more ornate as you advance through the materials.

The... let's call them prestige motifs (Xivkyn, Glass, Trinimac, Mercenary, Ancient Orc, Outlaw, Dark Brotherhood, Thieve's Guild, ect), have only one visual tier. Their color will change, but their weapons and armor will always have the same visual appearance. Level 3 thieves' guild daggers will look exactly the same as V16.

Soul Shriven is a special case. It swaps visuals on some items (like light belts), but not others. In general, this motif is basically random. Sometimes you'll get changes, most of the time it's the same armor regardless of level. I can't remember if it's weapons become more ornate over time or not.

Also, there's a lot of motifs that I don't remember if they have alternate visuals based on material. Akaviri and the PvP Alliance motifs for example. It's also possible that some of the motifs that I don't think have changing weapon designs actually do, and I'm unaware of it, because I don't want to throw malachite at a level 10 item.

No, it's fine. One thing to keep in mind, in the future: when you want your character to look really different from "just another dude/chick in armor," costumes and disguises are usually the way to go. There's a bunch of these, and you'll see them all over on players. Most costumes are crown store items, but you do get four by the time you reach CR160. (Golden Saint, Dark Seducer, Manimarco, and Abnur Tharn, in that order).

While it might not be what you want to hear, if you really want a snazzy looking outfit, and you don't have a disguise you like, your best option might be to spend a couple bucks and grab one of the cheap costume packs with visuals you like.
