In order to make room for new stock, the following items will be retired from the ESO Crown Store on all platforms on August 1st.

Come on now. Amazon does not retire stock to make room for items. They have pages. Stop preying on people that like collecting things. Pathetic!

But everyone will stop procrastinating and buy them now.

It's called creating scarcity. It's a tried and true model for creating demand in a marketplace. If you want people to buy something, make it limited time. The fact that this stresses you out means that it actually works. You may not have the money to buy something now, but you will feel the pressure to buy it now. That's why it upsets you. If you had the means, the pressure would get to you and you would buy, immediately.

They are removing the items that have been out a while and/or haven't been selling well to highlight new product. They will probably bring the other stuff back at a later date. It is just business. Product changes. Even on online stores.

@KaiVox22 It defys logic of digital space it isn't physical what does their crown store have like a GB and it gets full so they say "We need to dump the old items to make room for the new." I wonder? All this would make me do is buy the things I really might want which is probably nothing.

As has been noted, it's manufactured scarcity to spur buying. It's one of my least favorite psychologically manipulative tricks used by businesses. Is it really hurting anyone? Of course not. But in my opinion it's still a bad business practice that shows little regard for the customer base. Also, the offerings on the Crown Store have been really thin all along as they continue to hold back dozens of costumes and pets that are already finished becuase they know people will buy a gray cat just to have a cat when they really want a black cat but that hasn't been released yet. I'm not remotely interested in the peasant-like Imperial costumes currently on the showcase and am highly irritated that it'll be MONTHS before they get around to releasing the ones I actually want. I don't understand why they keep the store so poorly stocked. Surely they'd make as much if they offered some real selection?

Not really. I don't care about crown store items. Everything that has ever been in the crown store could be removed from the game and I wouldn't care. I preferred the game when it was a mandatory sub and no cash shop. I sub. I'll spend my sub crowns on the crown store but I will never buy crowns outright. People are getting too worked up over digital clothing and animals.

Removing products that haven't been in the store is just placing a limited time offer on them. It tends to get people to spend the money. A lot of companies do this. They bring out limited editions of normal products and sell them high and fast. It is like that "limited edition" Fallout Nuka Cola or whatever. It was just soda in a different bottle, but oh it is a special edition for a limited time and it was selling like crazy everywhere.

ZOS is trying to sell you products and what the are doing is an established business practice.

And even if it wasn't, these are digital clothes and animals people. Gain some perspective.

Well, you started a thread about cosmetic items, that have already been in the crown store for awhile, and are soon to be discontinued to make way for new stock.

Then, you said you weren't stressed about it and weren't buying the crown store items anyway. So, it must not be an issue. I don't think it's an issue.

So, is this a bait thread?

To respond to anyone who agrees with the business concept of a clearance?

Of course Amazon doesn't retire or discontinue stock. Manufacturers do.

But Amazon does reduce inventory lead time, which often leads to less inventory overall. That's a whole other kettle of fish, though.

Long story short, ZOS can do whatever it wants with the product it sells. That's their right and liability as manufacturer.

I get why they are rotating stock out. Impulse buyers and completionists will have to buy it now increasing sales. The part about them needing room for new stock is complete BS though. They are virtual items in a virtual store. Add a page if necessary. Don't pretend your customers have no clue what how digital items work.

can there be days where you bring back old items at reduced prices?

I missed out on the black smithing apron because I was taking a break from the game, but now can't buy that costume to show others that I am a crafter. It would be cool to see some of the items come back.

I never took the "make room for stock" note as literal. I figure it's an rpg... it's just fun language.

I do wish that there were more evergreen costumes available. Everyday clothing and maybe some basic armors should be there all the time. Then you can pepper in special and limited time offers.

Scarcity is good though. It helps maintain individually in the population and excitement when things come back.

If they take something out of the store and I didn't buy it , oh well . I'm not going to lose any sleep over vanity items . Limited time offers are just sales hype . I really have no issues with how they run that crown store because it's just options . If everyone stops spending money on over priced items , the prices will normalize , but I'm not going to blame the game for people that allow themselves to spend that much on some of those items . That's on them if they have the cash to burn .

    Don't use crowns. Problem solved.

I was a subscriber (have since cancelled my automatic renewal and am playing out the rest of my subscription time) and I'm sitting on 31,700 crowns. I never spent a single one.

Ever since they announced the change to in-game purchases as a model I knew this would happen. They're relying on these tricks and people with too much money or too little control to spend far more than they would in a subscription model. The advantage (if you can call it that) is that some people get to play for free. The disadvantages are many, however, and we've only seen relatively benign ones such as the time-limited offers. It can still get worse, e.g. the day they think of putting lottery items in the store (undaunted keys or PvP/Tel-Var boxes, anyone?) or stuff that actually impacts game mechanics (crown gear, etc.).

    Is it unprecedented? No.

Is it unexpected, creating artificial scarcity? No.

    Is it manipulative? Yes.

    Is it scummy tactics? Arguably.

Is it insulting to pass off as "making room for new stock" in a VIRTUAL store? Absolutely.

Has been literally debated to death though. They won't change it. Not when people keep buying $40 World of Warcraft mount reskins.

So, the paying customer that was simply unlucky enough to not be online for the 5 days their desired items were actually available get screwed.

More lost revenue for ZOS. GG.

Are you saying it is unprecedented for a business (online or brick and mortar) to have a clearance sale??

When a business have a clearance sale, they usually offer discounts on the stuff that is leaving.

ZOS did that on the first time they removed items, but not on the second time and as far as I know they are not doing it this time, are they? This is a legit question, I've been away for the entire day and might have missed the memo.
Just so that everyone knows, my Altmer still can't have black hair. About a dozen of Altmer NPCs in the game have black hair. Just saying.

    Meet my characters:
    Command: Do the thing.

Zadarri, Khajiit Fist of Thalmor: The thing was done, as commanded.
Durza gra-Maghul, Orc blacksmith: The thing was done perfectly, in the most efficient way.
Tegwen, Bosmer troublemaker: You can't prove I didn't do the thing.
Sings-Many-Songs, Argonian fisher: Sure, I'll do the thing... Eventually. Maybe.
Aerindel, Altmer stormcaller: After extensive research, I've come to the conclusion that doing the thing would be a waste of resources.
Liliel, Dunmer pyromancer: Aerindel said I shouldn't do the thing. Something about "resources".
Gyda Snowcaller, Nord cryomancer: I will find a way to do it that won't waste resources and make Aerindel proud of me.
Beatrice Leoriane, Breton vampire: I persuaded someone else into doing the thing. You are welcome, dear.
Sahima, Redguard performer: Doing the thing sounds awfully unpleasant and really not my problem.
Ellaria Valerius, Imperial priestess: I'll pray to the Eight for the thing to be done, if it is Their will.
