36k bounty - I've made a huge mistake...

I went on a killing spree around Daggerfall collecting stolen items to fence thinking that I could bank my gold and then get killed by a guard to clear my bounty and it turns out you can't. Do I have no choice other than waiting for my bounty to decay? I'll be damned if I'm paying off the bounty with my horse money!

Have you done any of the Thieves Guild DLC? There's some passives and rewards that will help clear it

I'm a mageblade.. so you know I just cloak on by... but why not just go through the back entrance to almost any outlaw refuge? All of them have a second entrance located outside of the city. Maybe try that. Good luck!

I'm a mageblade.. so you know I just cloak on by... but why not just go through the back entrance to almost any outlaw refuge? All of them have a second entrance located outside of the city. Maybe try that. Good luck!

My problem is that NPCs won't speak to me with a bounty, so I can't buy the horse I was trying to get with all that money I stole without waiting 10 days offline for it to clear. Sucks but I guess there's nothing I can do.

You could always deposit the money in the bank in any thieves guild refuge, then create an alt and buy the horse. It won't affect your bounty but you'll have your mount.

Maybe I'm just not understanding... if that's the case.. I'm sorry. I was thinking that the outlaw's refuge has a bank in it.. and that they (the NPC bankers) don't care where your money comes from.. although, that might just be a rumor.

I would go to an outlaw refuge from the back entrance.. sell the stolen items to the fence.. bank the gold at the banker in the refuge.. and walk out the front entrance with my hands up ready to "surrender" to the guards or make them kill me.. once the bounty cleared from dying or surrendering.. go get the horse. Is that an option?

If your goal is to buy a horse...

Go buy a horse in Cyrodiil. There's no justice system there, therefore all the NPC's in Cyrodiil will talk to you.

As for the bounty? Best get working on the thieves guild DLC, or just start a new character, lol.

I agree with the 3 main suggestions made...
Bank your gold and buy the horse on an alternate toon.
If you don't have an alt then make one and play it until the other toon's bounty runs down.
The Thieves Guild skill line has some passives that help your bounty go down at an accelerated rate.

Finish the Thieves Guiild questline get a 100K bounty removal or just go to PvP until its gone I had a 75K bounty for the mass murderer achievement lol stayed in PvP for a week this was before TG too lol

As others have stated, your best bet is to buy the horse on an alt (mounts are account-wide) and wait for your bounty to run down naturally. That being said... this is why you test ideas like this one on a SMALL scale first before going for gold. lol

keep an eye open for counterfit edicts in thieves stashes and put some points into the thieves guild/legerdemain/DB passives
i.e

Scales of Pitiless Justice (DB),
Kickback (Legerdemain)
Swiftly Forgotten and Clemency (Thieves Guild)

Thats what the Outlaws refuge is for... There is also a banker down there. And other small amenities that help you get your stolen goods off your chest.

Of course Guards are usually not always in the same place... so it will be possible to buy a horse if your heat is down and you are sneaky enough...

I'm actually considering making a Khajiit/Bosmer alt just to "go for the high score" with bounty. It's fun to have an actual reason to stealth sometimes.

Simply getting killed or surrendering doesn't clear your bounty. If you have money on you when the guard kills you or apprehends you, he takes enough to clear your bounty (if you have enough). If you're not carrying enough to clear the bounty, then the bounty doesn't go away.

I guess they figure it would be too easy to be murdering hobos otherwise.

When a Guard kills you he takes money from you that goes towards reducing your bounty. No money, no reduced bounty.

Ah.. I didn't realize that. I haven't done much in thieve's guild yet.. and I have yet to really get going with the killing and slaughtering. However, I've been saving up all the edicts I find.. so, the time for massive thieving and killing is nigh...

I'm not sure that's the case. I could be wrong, but I think they only stop talking to you when you have "heat" (the red sword in the justice system indicator), i.e. when you're kill-on-sight to the guards. If you lose the heat you can talk to NPCs again, though you still have to evade the guards to avoid being accosted.
