MagDk light or heavy armour

Simply put, which one is currently better? I'm running 5 heavy 2 light ATM and am liking the tankiness. Getting upto 27k resist buffed with volatile and a defending resto but I don't know if I'd be better off with the light armour passives for spell pen etc.

Magicka DK lacks a good single target ultimate (unless you want to be a meteor or soul assault spammer), dragonleap is bad for magicka because it champion scales as a physical attack, meaning youd have to split points between two trees, reducing the effectiveness of both.

They also lack direct single target spike damage. What this means, is magicka DK suffers from lack of burst potential, making light armor almost arbitrarily bad for PvP in the current environment. Youre better off just applying dots and outlasting your opponents vs trying to burst them, DK just doesnt have many options there.

Sure you could wind up some destro heavies, play the range game, but a good sorc or magblade is going to win that fight. DK's main strength via class skills lies within melee distance, indeed some of their best skills are all 8m range or less (including both dependable self heals in burning embers and inhale)

Also due to lack of mobility youre going to find the armor values of light to basically mean youre a quickly killed glass cannon with no survivability whatsoever, especially vs stam builds.

Most strong DKs today are heavy users for this reason. You lack spell pen, but you gain loads of sustain via constiution and not having to self heal as hard.

The only time I can see a LA DK being strong in PvP is if its a group synergy build with dedicated healers all over it keeping it alive, because one dizzying swing and youre going to feel it, whereas the heavy DK is going to laugh in the face of that blocked 3k uppercut and apply even more pressure damage until that pesky stam spammer backs off.

All that being said, magicka DK is currently the weakest class for 1v1, its actually stronger the more opponents it has. and is top notch for being the first in for group fights. Almost immune to range, tanky as hell, and still putting down AoE pressure damage. Light cant do that, not anymore.

I gave up my light mdk. The bonus dmg and reg never came to use since i dropped dead pretty fast. I too think heavy is the way to go.
In LA the only way managing at the frontlines for me was the healstaff ward that applies two shields, so i always can pop up one at low health and get back up via inhale. But i lost too much time shielding and healing, instead of actualy doing pressure.
Gonna give heavy a go when i have my gear. I stopped playing every day so it will take some time sadly

Ahh good I'm on black water right now, only just made my first mag Dk and loving it so far. My gear is a bit weird I know.

I've got two rings on syrabane (working on vicious death for the spell damage)
1 necklace of vicious death recovery enchant
    5 heavy 2 light
4 piece mara 4 piece Magnus s&b and resto

    Skills
    S&b
    Empowering chains
    Inhale
    Choking talons
    Burning embers
    Lash (unmorphed ATM)

    Resto
    Wings
    Volatile armour
Molten armaments (40% heavy attack one)
    Healing ward
Vampire cc can't remember it's name some sort of drain

I'm thinking of changing to vicious death jewelry
    Apprentice mundus
    5 heavy seducer
    4 Magnus
    Sticking with s&b resto

Would that give me more sustain and hopefully harder hitting whips (slightly)?

Either is fine tbh. Some days I feel fine in light some days heavy is needed. Heavy is beneficial for perma block builds so it depends how you build

If I were to go heavy on a mag DK or templar, what does everyone think is a good set to run with? Would be using it with 2 skoria, 2 torugs (dw and SnB), and probably willpower jewelry... unless there is better options

Just keep in mind heavy armor = light armor against stamina builds with sharpened maces and major/minor breach.
30k armor becomes around 14k before even champion points.

Spell penetration is alot harder to stack though.

    Elf Bane Set Heavy armor.

But as Soris says, your still going to get tore up from max Stam/sharpened builds etc. But its still a bit better then all light.

I still think they need to improve HA but what we got was a small improvement.

    LEVEL 50 CHAMPION 160

(2 items) Adds 967 Max Magicka

(3 items) Adds 129 Spell Damage

(4 items) Adds 129 Spell Damage

(5 items) Increases duration of your damaging fire effect by 2 seconds.

And light armor becomes literally zero. People always parrot about the armor reductions, but damn ill take 14k armor over zero.

I prefer light armor for the smallman/solo for cost reduction and regen.

    Hulkamania Heavy for group play.

I think blackrose has the most to offer in one set. It will handle your sustain, give you all the health and stamina you need and even increase your damage. I use everything you list except skoria. I either run malubeth or 1 kena 1 bloodspawn for damage and stam recovery depending on what I think I run into. I would like to return to 2 blood spawn again but im waiting for heavy pieces. (Not saying skoria is bad, I just haven't done enough testing with it).

The only weakness I have found with blackrose is against run away then nuke builds. They dont do enough regular attacks to keep Constitution triggered and you lose a lot of resources chasing them and missing from dodge roll and shuffle. But 1 resto heavy attack and you are back to half magicka.

Yes but light armor utilise shields better + more magicka return from harness in addition to having better penetration crit and cost reduction etc. So there is that.

Honestly it takes a lot longer for me to kil light armor shield stacker dk than a heavy armor one.

The following setup has been working well in group play, but not so great in 1v1 situations...

5x Blackrose (heavy / impen), 2x Engine Guardian (light / infused), 3x Willpower (necklace + S&B on the frontbar) and 2x Vicious Death (rings for spellpower). On the back bar I run 2x Endurance (S&B, health enchant with infused trait on shield) and lose the spell damage from the complete Willpower set, but at least I hit 30k health with foods and Structured Entropy. This allows me to use Coagulated Blood as heal with some effect.

All points are into magicka, all heavy armor glyphs are health and the two infused light armor pieces are enchanted with magicka. I feel quite tanky even in this patch, but I only block the heavy hitters (frags, wb / dyzzing, meteor, etc.), since I only have a total of 46% (36% S&B passives and 10% from CP) in block cost reduction.

The gear is only epic and not legendary and I don't have the Undaunted passives yet, otherwise stats would be a bit higher. On the front bar the spell damage sits around 1900 unbuffed (+SE buff, + up to 200 SD from heavy armor passive = reaching up to 2500 spell damage). Frontbar Magicka = 30k, Health = 25k, Stamina = 16K (values are not exact, but should be more or less accurate, with tri stat food). On the backbar the SD and Magicka are lower, but the health reaches 30K for the increased heal.

    Skills:
    Deep Breath
Fossilize OR Reverberating Bash OR Invasion
    Burning Talons
    Burning Embers
    Flame Lash
    Ulti - Shooting Star

    Backbar Skills:
Reflective Plate (for the 12% healing bonus of the passive) OR Shuffle (preferred)
    Coagulated Blood
    Structured Entropy
    Igneous Shield
    Elusive Mist
    Ulti - Devouring Swarm

Hope this helps for an alternative setup. Btw.: I totally got wrecked trying to play in light armor, but that might just be me.

Mostly heavy for me. But I do run a few light armor builds from time to time. But most of my set ups are heavy armor and I will say that with DB changes, Im loving heavy armor more than ever for my mdk.

I wouldn't say mag dk is dead in and out of a group. On black water the only trouble I run into are mag plars. They out heal my dps so easily. All other classes you can lock them down with cc and talons.

My personal preference is LA, the reason being is spell pen. If I want to kill anything in a mDK amount of reasonable time you need the spell pen. You can get your Spell and Physical resists high enough to make LA work just fine, along with your crit resists.

I have a new build that i recently made and so far it is working better than previous ones ive made solo after IC changes. In groups it works incredibly well and worlds better than previous builds ive made since IC.

On Saturday i had 2 Standards of Might down at the same time, so the dmg and KBs are rolling in really well.

Heavy armor with sword and shield, for the tankiness. Dks are great at mitigating damage so it's better to spec into that area than specing for damage.

If you are going a fire mage type with resto/destro aka 1.5 dk then wear a skirt imo.

I personally like to wear 5h/1m (waist)/1h (head) for undaunted.

As above, I wear elf bane + 2 piece worm cult + 2 piece skoria + 3 piece willpower.

    it's fun
Tl;dr really weigh the fun you have in game vs the business practices you are supporting.
