You now get a red helmet icon at the bottom of your screen when one of your pieces of armor is broken. You don't actually need to repair them before that (they still give full protection up until they are down to 0, this is different than how it used to be thank goodness!)
I tend not to bother repairing low level gear because I will likely replace it before it breaks entirely. High level gear you will have the money and desire to repair. Make sure you go into a dungeon run or other group activity with your armor in good health, no-one want to wait for you to repair stuff mid-dungeon. You can also get repair kits from blacksmithing/clothing/woodworking writ rewards, but wait until an item is broken or nearly broken before using the repair kits.
