ESO PC Windows Xbox One controller support. How is it? Can I use an external Hard Drive to play?

I really want to play ESO on my PC but I for me it's so much smoother with a controller when I play on the Xbox One. I tried playing it on Mac and it doesn't work at all for me using the built in controller support. I tried using a third party software and it works pretty good, but something is just a bit off there and not as smooth on the Xbox One. I would like to know if controller support for ESO on Windows works better than it does on Mac?

I've used both the original Xbox one controller and the elite Xbox one controller and like them both.
There are some limitations to the elite but that's more on Microsoft than ZOS.
What were the specific draw backs on the Mac?-PC (PTS)/Xbox One: NewBlacksmurf

With or without third party support? When using third party support for the Xbox One controller (before the elite came out) with trying ZOS beta support, it was a mess. I couldn't assign any buttons, couldn't get the Y axis invert to work. With the third party support it almost worked good. Only thing I had to do was using the right stick as the mouse look so I can use it as looking. Thing is trying to use it when in the screens as a mouse, just seemed off.I will address your external HDD question.

I use to play with Xpadder for a while and then some other tools but it's better with the ZOS support in my opinion if you are O K with the Gamepad UI-PC (PTS)/Xbox One: NewBlacksmurf

Data Transfer Rates.
USB 3.0, while the spec is technically fast enough to play a game, shares the bus with every other USB device connected to your rig, so it can be slowed down because of that. USB2 and USB1.1, fuggeehdabotit. Well, you might get USB2 to work, maybe. The other problem is, not all USB is created equal, some is slower than others, even if they are rated at the higher rate. ESata is almost HDD Controller Speed, or full speed that the drive can work at.

You can try it, but if you get really slow cell loads, texture loads and just outright hangs, freezes and crashes on cell loads, it is the USB connection that is more than likely causing the issue.

✭✭✭✭✭Get an SSD to replace the HDD in your laptop. I did this and the difference was night and day. ESO seems to be very HDD-dependent. When I put in my SSD my loading screens (Cyrodiil excluded) dropped to 5-6 seconds. USB is a no-go as @Nestor explained. Even if you had an eSATA port I think you'd be better off with an internal SSD.
If price is a concern, get a smaller one. A 120gb or thereabouts SATA SSD should hold your OS and games/programs, and you can always store other data on external drives. I can't recommend the Samsung EVO line enough - they're not the cheapest but they're among the fastest and most reliable.
Budget allowing, and if you have an m.2 port in your laptop that uses PCI, speeds can go up to 3x what you can squeeze over SATA. This would also let you keep your HDD as a secondary drive.0 -

I use a Xbox controller every now and then and it works just fine on Windows 10. Some nights I don't fancy sitting at a desk so I just plug my controller and TV in and game on the sofa - no issues whatsoever.
