So pre-DB my highest level character was VR12. I just finished patching and now I login my character is Champ level 255, leaving me 85 points in each tree. I expected 120 in each tree, or 360 in all.
So, can anyone explain what champion level I should be and how so if I was vr12 pre-DB?

Gear levels are based on total Champion Points, not points in any particular star or group. If you had less than 120 CP in total, you would have been brought up to 120 CP so you could continue to wear VR12 gear (now CP120 gear). But you did still get 30 bonus CP (12 VR x 2.5 CP per VR) to take you from the 225 CP you had before today to the 255 CP you have now.
Note that yesterday you could only wear up to VR12 gear. But since you have 255 CP today, you can wear all gear in game, including max level CP 160 gear.
Soooo....the highest level of gear obtainable is "cp160", even though the max amount of champ points (total) is 501? Im hoping not to be the only confused by this. It makes no sense to me that if Champion points are now the only endgame level system, it wouldnt be considered "champ point 501" level gear.
Please tell me Im again misunderstanding you. And how did ZOS come up with 2.5 champ points per vr level? IMO, VR levels are a hell of a lot more. And sorry if any of this has been discussed here already...Im sort of new to this topic as its only just now affecting me (Xbox one player)

They basically decided that, for the purpose of difficulty scaling, every VR would equate to 10 CP. The "gear cap" (160cp) and the "level cap" (501cp) have no relation to each other. If they added gear tiers all the way up to 501 with this conversion it would have destroyed any sense of balance since people at 501 with 501 gear would be vastly overpowered. Please tell me Im again misunderstanding you. We don't know how they came up with 2.5 cp / vr, but it's what we got. Remember that you were earning cp while getting those 12 vr levels, the 2.5 bonus is just a little icing on the cake.

This is true and again not complaining about the "free" champ points I recieved, I guess it comes down to being my fault for not reading the patch notes completely or understanding the way this would work.
The only objection I have left is the fact that player levels are now considered their total Champ points rather than their champ points per tree. If I could assign my 255 points to any tree as I deem fit (as opposed to it being divided into 3), then it would make more sense for that to be my total level. As opposed to a champ level "255" who only utilize 85 points per tree, while the true max level player at 501 can assign twice that in every tree...thats where my confusion comes from. I understand that pre-DB this was implemented as a balance mechanism but now it seems strange.
