Magicka Mage levelling tips?

andypandy88
Hi guys I'm pretty much a complete noob but currently working on a magician based sorc. Really happy with how it's working out for me at the moment, however just a few questions for my journey along the way...

Regarding crafting, is it viable to really go into clothing and woodworking or will I miss the skill points later in the game?

I'm also focusing on all light armour with the passives to go with it. Would it be worth using some heavy just for the survivable it's as most of the game I will be solo?

Also I would really appreciate any other tips as I've done enough research but sifting through the boatloads of end game guidance which to me just makes no sense to me!

Many thanks :)

My suggestion to new players is to use every character slot up immediately as filler mules, that's an extra 60 slots of storage space and you can skip the beginning part after your first character. All characters have access to the same account bank allowing you to transfer excess items around until you need them, you can always delete and recreate as an actual character later on.

As for crafting don't worry about spending points in any of them right away, but do research and deconstruct everything you find then store the material on a mule until you do want to craft. Don't try to do everything on a single character, at least not at the beginning, focus on a path or two to start with until you get more skill points in reserve, around 10 or so. You can use another character to research traits as well then later on when your main has nothing left to research your alt can make the item trait and give to your main.

Well so far I have one point in clothing just to get the mats, I'm only level 14 but it would be better to not put any points in until later in the game or am I safe to say level up clothing to craft newer materials and go from there?

Something about having 7 mules seems a bit....fussy, albeit useful but are you advising to say categorise each alt for the type of items they carry, transferring items from my main to the bank then the appropriate items from the bank to the correct alt?

And for the sake of all things holy, don't play a Sorc anything.. DK or NB is better for magic or stam base.. unless it is just for fun and RP etc.. then play whatever.

Its up to you how you want to split up your materials, but yeah that's usually the way to go about it. You really don't need any points in crafting to use it, just deconstruct everything and that will give you the skill ups toward each profession except provisioning and alchemy. At the least you should get 1 point in Keen Eye for all except Enchanting, runes have their own glow that they're easy to spot. Crafted gear is not really necessary early in the game, as long as you continue to quest you'll be given adequate gear to use. When you have enough traits you can start making your own sets and even making things for future characters.

Starting at level 16 onward you'll find dropped sets, the best one available to you at this point is Warlock which comes in jewelry, shoulders, robes, and helm slots afaik. Very good starter set, can last you beyond its level range for quite some time especially if you get the 5pc bonus. Anything that is bound to you can also be shared among all your characters, once used does not mean its useless, you can store them in your bank for another character to use later on.

Sounds good to me just wanted to make sure I didn't cripple myself or spend way too much time, to be honest I was just concerned that devoting too much time into crafting would seriously slow the pace with levelling and enjoying the game.

Ummmmmm ok maybe I'm missing something but why would a sorc not be any good? Do they just get owned later game compared to other builds. I did start a Templar but it just didn't seem right to me, I guess I like my standard archetypal roles which I know ESO really mixes up. What's a good class/build for a first character to take to end game just to get familiar?

Thing is I'm just a casual player maybe a few nights so I feel like I need something that works and feels right the first time! Lol

Yes, while levelling up, try to always use at least one piece of Heavy AND one piece of Medium armor, so that you can level up those skills as well. (For gear, just use any green set items that you find while questing/exploring). The first reason for this is that you will eventually want to level up the Undaunted skill line for its passives, which can give you an extra 6% each of magic/stam/health per TYPE of armor that you wear, so it works well to have a 5/1/1 build for endgame. If you have enough skill points, it may be beneficial to also unlock some passives in the Medium and Heavy armor lines. A second reason for levelling all armor types is in case you later decide to try respec your character as a Stam sorc or possibly tank sorc instead, where Medium or possibly Heavy armor would work better. (It's fairly cheap and easy to completely re-orient your build). Thirdly, ideally you should try to unlock and level up ALL the skills available, including Medium and Heavy armor active skills. There are occasionally situations where it is worth using skills like that (e.g. for the heavy armor skill immunity to knockback). (Do a respec occasionally to free up skill points from skills that have been levelled but are not being used).

For general levelling and game tips, it depends a lot on your playstyle.
    1. If you just want to try out the endgame challenges, ask around for help with Grinding xp, it's the fastest way to level up and get to vr16 (soon cp160). Be warned that you may be low on Skill points and will have a lot of skills that are not unlocked or not levelled.
    2. If you are interested in PvP, you can dive in as soon as you reach level 10. Be aware that you will need a PvP-oriented guild of the same faction as you, and should ideally buy a horse/mount as soon as possible (and train it for speed). If possible, also buy the Imperial City DLC. Note that you can get decent XP and some skill points from PvP, but will tend to be gold-poor.
    3. If you are interested in Achievements, you will want to do EVERYTHING, which will take a long, long time in this game.
    4. As a quester, I generally prefer to enjoy the storyline and quests in each zone. This takes more time than grinding, but you can skip many of the quest hubs in each zone if you like. Only the main storyline quests for each zone (and main game story questline) give skill points. You should also get the skyshards in each delve, and out in the open in each zone.
    5. JOIN AT LEAST ONE GUILD, ideally at least two player guilds. At least one of these should be a Trading guild, where you can sell interesting loot items to other players via your guild store. You should also have at least one social or PvE guild, and if so inclined, a PvP guild. Once at max level, you may also want to find a Trials-oriented guild.
    6. If you play on PC or Mac, get some ADDONs from esoui.com. I strongly recommend "Skyshards", "Lorebooks", and "Destinations". These will help you find all the skyshards and lorebooks in each zone, as well as discover locations and get achievements.
    7. You will also need to initially invest in more bag space, more bank space, and a horse/mount, as soon as you accumulate enough gold (it will pay off in the long run). Once you have a mount, visit the stable master every day to buy some horse-riding "training" - both speed and bag space are good to have (although horse speed is currently buggy in some zones).
    8. Specifically for a magic Sorc, make sure to level up all your class skill lines, destruction staff and dual wield weapon skill lines. (Level up other weapon skills and guild skills as well, if possible) It will take a while (usually level 40 or higher), but once you have unlocked the sorceror "Hardened Ward" skill, you will find that Sorcs are quite easy to play. The storm Atronach ultimate is very powerful for earlier levels, but you will find Negate and Overload are the most powerful ultimates when you are high level. Ideally, you also want to level your Mage Guild skill line to level 10, to unlock the Meteor ultimate. This normally requires exploring and finding all the Lorebooks in all the low level zones plus at least three "Veteran" zones, i.e. you need to finish the main quest first and be at least L50 to do it.

Excellent stuff very thorough and giving me a lot to think about tbh. I have been trying to throw in some medium and heavy especially as the passives at the moment are not giving me much of a benefit whereas the additional armour really is.

Right well I'm going to start hoarding mats and levelling... Tbh I'm enjoying the story and questing element quite a bit I just wish the dungeon finder worked, I've waited for about 2 hours today with only being put in with vr 16's to basically suck and have the group give up the second room.

I will need to have a look at guild stores and they're mechanics but whenever I come across them in the hub cities, there's never anything in my level or when I do search for my level everything high level comes up. Well I'm sure it's just part of the learning curve haha

Definitely research everything even if you don't think you will use it; but save the skill points until you need them. It does you no good to have 3 or 4 traits learned if you can't reach a set station without getting killed. When you have leveled to the next tier for armor and such put skill points into being able to craft them. I do recommend putting a point into keen eye for alchemy and clothing. I found that once I needed flax it was hard to find in Grahtwood and near impossible to see in Stormhaven. I had to use my Dunmer in Deshaan for harvesting since that was the only place it was fairly common and easy to find. As for alchemy, keen eye is essential for finding Columbine and you want Columbine. Wood is fairly easy to spot though and you will get enough easily for fashioning staves.
Scura di Notte - Altmer Nightblade (gear)
Lalin del Sombra - Bosmer Sorcerer (alchemy/enchanting)
    Angevin Sarkany - Bosmer Dragonknight
Alkemene Velothi - Dunmer Warden (Morrowind)
Sanna yos'Phalen - Altmer Sorcerer (provisioning)
    Cosima di Mattina -Altmer Sorcerer
    Naria Andrano - Dunmer Templar
Luca della Serata - Redguard Templar

Don't let that scare you off, I play a sorc in endgame and I keep up with my guildies in terms of DPS. It will just take time to master. We don't have a ton of DPS sustain but if you are a good player that won't even matter because you will perfect your rotation.

    ACK!!

You are breaking my character-driven-role-players heart...!
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.
    ***
Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis
