Maelstrom Staff Enchant Bugged

So I've been helping out a friend lately with a new rotation and have noticed something a little troubling while doing so.

So the Maelstrom Staffs many people farm for look like the following:

cvlwiEV.png

Notice how the enchants states that while enemies are affected by Wall of Elements that they take an additional "X" amount of damage per light and heavy attack while giving a flat spell damage bonus. The staff indeed does give the additional spell damage, that's not the issues... what is the issue is the extra damage to light and heavy attacks not applying at all.

See the combat log below:

fIVfwKZ.png

So what I did was use the Lightning staff since I can get the most amount of ticks. You can see at the beginning that's all I used, later in the log I added in WoE... BUT the damage to my light/heavy attacks did NOT change. I did some additional test and found that the tick will only apply if you are not standing near the target. This is absurd considering that the enchant requirement is that it just needs to be IN the WoE.

@ZOS_GinaBruno @ZOS_JessicaFolsom @Wrobel surely this is not intended?

@Gilliamtherogue @hedna123b14_ESO you guys are avid testers and usually come across many bugs... does this sound familiar? What about the player base, have you guys noticed this as well?

@rokrdt05 I have done pretty extensive testing of this myself and have gotten different results. One thing you might want to check is if your vMA destro staff is on your front bar for example, Wall of Elements has to be on the same bar. However you can get the extra damage with the weapon on your other bar as well after dropping the wall. There does also seem to be a very small area just in front of the caster that is not covered by the wall, so if an enemy runs up to you and you remain stationary and cast the wall they may not be effected by it. Better to strafe around the enemy, trying to keep them in the middle of the wall, or at least move up a little after you cast it. The effect does work though if you keep these things in mind.

Yes, WoE was kept on the front bar. (I keep Destro/DW)

I also noticed this were the enemy has to be in the center of the wall (which is absurd considering the radius). If the enemy does move to the outskirts of the ability it does not apply the damage. This isn't an issue if you're in group/raid setting where you have someone else hold agro and can't keep enemies at range. However solo (for instances like vma) this isn't the case and I shouldn't have to recast an ability or continuously reposition enemies for an enchant that should work regardless of where the enemy stands in the wall.

That or they should clarify the enchant to say "extra damage if enemy is in center of wall"

I encountered this bug in the Orsinium PTS and reported it. As you pointed out, the target has to be in the middle of WoE, the edges don't count.

I have noticed at times the bonus damage fails to apply, but it usually works for me. Also it persists through bar swapping, my dual wield light attacks can get the bonus damage after I cast WoE with my Maelstrom staff on the other bar.

I haven't noticed that the bonus light attack damage procs on the enemy hit, rather it is bound to your character itself. You should see a visual effect after casting WoE, and your weapons will glow. If you hit any target, even ones outside of your WoE, you should have the bonus damage apply as well.

It's kind of like the Master's Bow, it said targets affected by Poison Injection would take bonus damage, but in actuality casting Poison Injection gave you a buff that would apply to any and all damage dealt, regardless of the target.

It's just odd to me that it's not consistent. I'm not sure I understand what you're saying though, because if it is a buff to me, then shouldn't it apply regardless?

The addon S'rendarr (buff tracker) shows the effect as "Crushing Wall" an additional ground based attack that applies in tandem with Wall of Elements. If it is true that there are spots in the Wall that do not apply the extra damage, perhaps the size of the Crushing Wall is a little smaller than the Wall. Has anyone compared between the two morphs of Wall? Maybe Crushing Wall is only the size of the unmorphed version and so does not touch the extended area the Blockade covers...?

Wall of Elements IS smaller than Blockade, Blockade's morph purpose is to increase size and duration, so this is likely the case if it is indeed bound to enemies within. Good call on that.

Even so that is a little misleading. The enchants have always applied to morphs and the like, surely it's unintentional?

It's actually not misleading at all. It only says Wall of Elements on the tooltip. I don't think it was intended to only be the base ability and likely is caused by a coding issue of only using WoE as the trigger, and forgetting to add the morphs unlike the other ability augmenting weapons. It definitely should get fixed imo.

This is OLD news. Reported this numerous times myself. A fix was implemented in a patch note somewhere which I shot down ASAP. You can probably see a complaint in some of the patch notes for Orsinium or something.

Short story is the enemy must be in the middle-ish area for the buff to happen. I would also like this fixed, but it is small potatoes compared to other glaring issues.

Oh, I never claimed this was recent. I just noticed this recently while playing with a new rotation using a Lighting Staff. Previously I used a Fire Staff and always appeared to get the bonus damage.

I do agree that there are other issues that should be addressed, however I would think this is a simple fix.
