How difficult for new players to catch up with current CP?

Hello all!

It has been a while since I played last and I have been a bit out of the loop on what's been happening. When I left, Champion Points were a bit of a contention because of a lack of catch up mechanics, and I never really got a chance to see how that ended.

I noticed in another on the front page that some players were talking about hitting 160CP, while others were talking about hitting 360-400. That's quite a bit. >_>

For a player who has not even reached V1 yet, what's the chance that player would be able to become competitive in PvP within a 3-4 month period if they play 3-4 hours a day?

I wanted to get a feel for what players currently felt was the situation. When I left, the answer was generally "There should be no expectation for you to be competitive if you haven't been playing since the beginning, and if you don't like that then you can leave", so I had some trepidation returning; simply playing a game to be cannon fodder / someone else's ego boost wasn't really what I was looking for. I'd definitely like to have a chance at getting to a point where player skill starts to have more of an affect than player stats!

Anyhow, thanks in advance for the answers!

CP is easy, get to level 50 find something to grind on.etc. even easier now, same thing with lore books and shards, little more time in pvp to get those skills.. leveling the horse every 20hrs, daily undaunted runs to level 9 and crafting to 9 traits will take some time.

For me, it took a year to reach 410

What's the power difference between someone with, say 200CP vs someone with 410? Is it basically a one sided fight, or does the advantage start to dwindle the farther you go?

You can also participate in PVP campaigns that have CP disabled, like BlackWater Balde and Azura Star on PC NA.

First of all, while you're building CP, you can work in the no CP campaign, Azura's Star. Second, the first levels of CP will go really quickly, especially if you set aside some time to grind. I'd actually suggest (if you can stomach it) going to do the silver and gold undaunted pledges each day before you PvP (if your undaunted rank isn't maxed) and after that, do the random daily dungeon. You get like 100k of XP for doing the normal random daily, which would burn through your enlightenment in one go. Unlike before, you can queue up with an already fully formed group and still get the XP bonuses. Then you'd have ~2.5-3.5 hours left to PvP where you'll still earn some CP albeit at a lower rate.

Well... Considering that DB launch will make it a tad bit harder to obtain champion points if you're between levels 300-500. I'd say you have a very long road ahead of you. Very long. Not to mention people are still getting champion points, but just can't allocate them. Meaning that once the cap is increased, you'll have some players who are already at that cap as well. And so the process will continue.

TLDR Ver.: You're fighting a: Losing uphill battle, if you're trying to catch-up to people who're up and above the cap.

Awesome! Is there a limit to how long I can use these campaigns? Or could I play in them forever if I wanted a balanced playing field? Because this sounds like it is right up my alley. I'm a huge fan of concepts like Guild Wars 2's "Structured PvP", where gear and levels are normalized for the rounds.

    Yes! It does.
You need 300 CP minimum in a CP campaign just to survive or kill your target in 1vs 1 battle. The rest is your gear and skill.

BwB campain has a limit, you can only join it with a non-vet character. However, Azura is open to all characters regardless of their level.

There is a cap of points for which CP gives you stats and HP ST MP.

Players keep farming CP beyont that cap which further increases their HP ST MP.

You wont catch up to pvpers that play since day 1

With CP, I think this is the intention of the game developer to keep you pinned to this game. After completing all the quests, you can just quit and go to another game, but it is trying to level up/get max CP is what keeping me glued, and I'm sure for most others as well. If it takes a year to reach max CP, then yeah, we have a long road ahead.. for those just been at this for a month or two.

I so agree. Been there when I first reached V16 and ventured into Cyrodiil and got dessimated in a PvP fight a few times.

    1. CP wasn't here since day 1, it was added last year.
    2. CP increased stats is based on the number of CP spent not how many you have, going over the 501 CP won't grant you anymore stats as you're unable to spend them.
    3. He can eventually catch up to players at the 501 cap if Zos chooses not to raise the max rate for a while, and they have a lot of ranges to go through before that happens.

@Ch4mpTW are you aware that for XP purposes the game considers you 160CP once you pass 160CP? So even though you are 100 or more over the monster level you will still get the full XP value from mobs. It was confirmed in the website article about removing VR. (Maybe your post was before that article though)

If that's not what you are referring to... can you explain why it's harder?

While Zos has realized the poor design of the CP system and have made some improvements though not enough.

Initially you'll get CP fast and of course the more active player will gain them faster. Once you get near 300 you'll be prett solid as long as you place the CP well.
