How is armour penetration calculated?

Decided whether to use axe or mace next patch on my stam nb, thinking about it, it depends on how it's calculation.

If flat values are first then the actual amount thats reduced by % won't be nearly as high.

For example if someone has 20k physical resist and i'm a stamina night blade, 10k will be taken away by suprise attack and sharpened next patch before the 20% from using a mace applies, so it'll only ignore 2k armour.

In that case i feel like the bleed would be better. Also % penetration is useless vs shields while bleed goes through them.

Anyone got an answer?

Really the only downside with axes is the RNG attached to the bleed chance. There's also armor reduction coming through poison making iirc, so if you feel comfortable with the bleed chance then axes are actually pretty nice on a stam nb. I would expect axes with the new 1800 unresistable damage enchantments to work nicely against enemies with shields as well.

I found this from Asayre a while back and had it saved for my own purposes:

If in doubt, just google "Asayre *insert topic*" and he's probably done some work on it.

This link should provide you info of what classes as what within the Nirnhoned, Precise and Sharpened spoiler.

Thanks, seems the % pen acts first in the calculation, no wonder a lot of people consider maul the best for pvp.

You literally cut the targets resistant by 20% before the 10k flat penetration comes into play. Hmm.

I'll have do a bit of calculations to see how effective it actually is at different armour levels.

    Thanks though.

No problem, this should help you with armour levels: http://tamrielfoundry.com/topic/optimal-weapon-and-trait-combination-for-2h-and-dw/

Although after looking at it, it doesn't include axes. I'm not sure whether class abilities that are seemingly melee (i.e. Surprise Attack) proc the axe bleed or whether it's just 2H abilities.

If it's the former and you don't use 2H abilities as your main DPS then I'd suggest an axe isn't the way to go for maximising damage and I'd follow the information in the link provided although it doesn't take in to account (and I don't know if it will ever) the changes with DB). However, if you do mostly use 2H abilities and/or the axe procs with all melee-esque class abilities then it's obviously something to calculate.

Its calculated on the thickness of the armour. Heavy armour is the thickest, medium just below, and light the thinnest.

You also need to take into account the motif used to craft the armour, some are a bit thinner by default like the Bosmer style.
