No competition in WoW cause every expansion that's been out plus in vanilla 2 continents. WoW is very huge.

WoW no. FFXIV, it depends on how you look at it. FFXIV has many more instanced group and solo areas.

WoW? No. FF XIV? Likely. But let's also not forget that WoW has 10 years of content.

Dereth (the world of Asherons Call) is larger than any of the above mentioned maps. On top of that it is seamless, meaning no zones.

This subject peaked my interest so I've been doing a little research. WoW is relatively small at around 80 square miles, Asherons call is 500 square miles, guild wars is 15k square miles, and lord of the rings online is an amazing 30k square miles. Not sure how legible this map is but see if you can google it. This map is probably a few years old so you can probably add another 30-40 square miles to WoW but it still doesn't hold a candle to the others

That's only including the base WoW map.
There's a lot more WoW that displayed there.

That's why I said add another 30-40 square miles, which still puts it far behind in terms of size

Maybe I'm showing my age, but I think EQ1 might be competitive with a lot of these games. It took about 15 minutes running in a straight line to get across a particular zone made in the vanilla game. When you take a boat from one continent to another, you 'actually' take that boat across the water, no traveling by map with a loading screen.

Oh yeah, plus they were still releasing expansions last I checked, so it's probably hands down the winner.
(just confirmed, 22 expansions, last one from 2015)

    Okay, mmorpg.

Even with that there are still titles like Black Desert and Dragon's Dogma Online. ESO is middle of the road as far as graphics are concerned. Not as cartoony' as WoW or FFXIV, but not the most stunning graphics either.

Graphics should never take precedence over gameplay. Like many here, I played WoW for years and greatly enjoyed it. I resisted for a long time because I hated the 'cartoon' graphics, but once I started playing I realised how foolish that was. Heck some of my favourite games over the last few years have been things like Terraria, with 8-bit style graphics.

Its infinite? This whole time I thought you could walk to one place to another in Arena. I also thought that title went to infinite generation games like Minecraft.

They are both procedurally generated, yes. I do not believe I've seen a defined limit to arenas map size, unlike daggerfall which has 161,600 square km (edit for consistent measurement units) as a limit. (I've seen a 6 million square kilometer estimate for arena though.) you can walk but it takes a while.

Edit: a brief search says mincraft has a 4 billion square kilometer limit (the mathemetical limit?)

I played lotr online for years and it was the best mmo at least imo
    The zones were awesome
But the downfall much like this game at launch was the inability to get a horse without real money
May the Schwartz be with you.
