Returning PC Player Assistance?

Hey all, not sure if this is the correct forum. Seems like it may be. So I'm thinking about coming back to playing this game, after a significant time away. I stopped playing roughly a few months before the release of the first DLC, so around about a year ago. I had played all the betas and from release up until then, albeit pretty casually. So I don't really claim any perfect grasp of the game in the first place, so I'll check out the basic guides again. Can someone direct me to the most recent and relevant information regarding the game or the most helpful guides for returning players as far as more advanced info goes? I figure I need to relearn a lot. I have no idea if my builds are even relevant anymore. My highest level character was a cobbled together VR1, but I saw the news that the Vet system is going away soon? Anyway, I would appreciate some help getting myself up to date. Don't really know where to start. Thanks.

First of all, let me say welcome back. There are some good guides online I always try and find ones for 2016, although I would say there are some major changes coming with the Dark Brotherhood.

ESO Academy can be a pretty good resource for guides although I haven't used it in awhile esoacademy.com/

There is a pretty good thread on reddit for returning players for the DB dlc https://reddit.com/r/elderscrollsonline/wiki/returning

Of course, the PTS threads can provide you with an insight into what's changing.

Unfortunately, a lot of the guides seem to cater for top level players.

    Hope that helps a bit

Deltia tends to keep his guides up so if you want a history of changes to the game and builds since you left including some current builds you could check his site out

Thanks as well. Vaguely related. As I said, my highest level character is VR1. Should I keep that character or remake to relearn?

Oh I would definitely keep it, if you'd like help with gear sets just send me an in-game mail if you play on the EU server as to what class you are etc and perhaps we can get you up to speed so to speak a bit quicker.

Even if you don't play on EU I'm sure there's plenty of good folk on other servers/platforms willing to assist.

Check out stuff on crafted sets too always helpful.

Definitely keep that character. At the end of the month veteran ranks are being removed and replaced with the champion point system so your VR1 character is already eligible to earn champion points. You can change attribute points and skills if you decide how you previously built your character isn't feasible with today's game.

@Shadowfx1970 posted some great resource links and here's a recent post on reddit that lists even more helpful links

I'm NA, but I appreciate the offer. I'm gonna look for guilds again soon so I'll probably figure something out. Would you say there are builds that are irrelevant now or are they all pretty much still fair game? If there's a particular date I should stay ahead of I'd like to know, if you do.

There are some new class skill changes coming in the next update. The current PTS notes set them out if you are interested. So will be new build guides after it goes live.

As others have said keep your vet (beauty of 8 character slots). You get inspiration once a day for CPs but you can only gain CPs on a Vet character so even if you delete it later at least you can gain your CPs on the character while you level another one. Inspiration can build up but only to 12 days worth.

I cross posted some of the same stuff to reddit but with more detail, as I thought of some extra info/questions. so I'll dump that in here in case anyone has any further information. Obviously I've already received some guidance. This is just a copy/paste.

Alright so I haven’t actually played this game since before Imperial City DLC. Before that I hadn’t gotten very far and spent most of my time in 1-50 PvE. So I’m gonna admit I don’t really know much about how to play this game, at least definitely not well. I just patched the other day and I'm ready to give it another shot. Don't own any of the DLC yet.

I have a handful of characters I never really got anywhere with and my highest level was VR1, but probably a terrible build. I’m wanting to give it another shot and I want to get better. Could I maybe get some assistance figuring out what I should do to get caught up on how the game is now? Besides reading tons of patch notes and the wiki for returning players this sub has available. What are the best guides to read or watch that make things easy to understand (preferably videos)? I don't have a lot of time to dedicate to intense study of game mechanics, but I don't want to be clueless as I am now. I need some kind of good foundation going into the game as I wasn't very good in the first place and now there have been a lot of changes.

As for builds, I could also use some help figuring them out. I tend to like distance stealth so I focused on bow almost entirely for my VR1, a Bosmer Nightblade. I’m open to learning other play styles too but obviously I’m interested in hanging onto my VR1 (even though the system is getting overhauled I’ve been told it’s a good idea to keep him). Anyway, these are the characters I have right now, so it would be cool to be directed to some of the better builds I could use? Or some info on how to craft your own builds maybe. But honestly I’m kinda not really interested in getting that involved in builds or theorycrafting or whatever. I know the Dark Brotherhood DLC is coming soon and that will likely bring changes, but I gotta start with something.

Nightblade, Bosmer, VR1. Focused almost entirely on a bow/distance stealth. Willing to overhaul but want to keep the bow.
Sorcerer, Altmer, 17. Really don’t know what is most effective with this character. Obviously didn't get far at all. Originally started to try a battlemage style with heavy armor, 2H, and Storm Calling. It was an old featured build on the Battlemaster's Corner I think. I’ve developed this guy for RP too, where he is a thief as well. So yeah, no idea what to do there, so really open to suggestions. I think the most important things are Storm Calling and something that isn't a traditional robes/staff mage but is still effective.
EDIT: Adding in my gf's Dragonknight into the mix. She could use the help too. An Orc, about the same level as my sorc up there. She was running some kinda build with staff and light armor. We both haven't played in a while so don't remember exactly what it was, but it was from Battlemaster's Corner or whatever at the time too. Any suggestions on how to make this class pretty easy to handle and survivable with some healing would be awesome, that would be great for her.

Those are the two I’m not interested in remaking, so I’m committed to just rebuilding. I was also pretty interested in testing out something more like a paladin? Would that be a templar? I had a Dunmer I wanted to try that with.

Also if there's anything similar to like how a necromancer plays in GW2, I'd love to look into that. I like applying debuffs and DoTs. Thanks in advance.

tl;dr - (since I know I ramble) returning player that basically doesn't know anything anymore or ever looking for easy to handle guides and some advice on current gameplay and builds so I can handle surviving and enjoying the game.
