New player bother with crafting?

Murbayn
Murbayn
So I'm getting back to ESO, have never had a very high character so restarting.
Is crafting even worth it?
Should I just focus on gathering instead?

Thanks in advance for replies. I must say through my time playing this game has had the best community in helping each other out!

I always build crafting as I go, even if I do not craft my own stuff on that character. Although, it depends on how fast you "go".

I usually do this by simply deconstructing everything I get. I can do everything except for Alchemy that way. It is not exactly the fastest way to level crafting, but if you decide to start crafting later in the game, it provides a better starting point.

Almost every end game set-up includes at least parts of crafted sets. Being able to craft these yourself saves time and gold from looking for a crafter. Crafting for others can be such a PITA with little profit, I rarely craft except for friends or guild members. It's also easier to experiment with different builds if you can craft your own. It's actually easy to level every craft with minimal skill points, though enchanting is very slow. There are many threads describing how to level crafts. The most important thing to focus on early is researching traits, because the last traits take weeks to learn.

Short answer: To each his own, but every craft is needed at end game, and there are distinct advantages to being able to craft for yourself.

I'd HIGHLY suggest doing crafting as you go through the game, your equipped items (weapons, armour, provision, and enchant) can make or break you especially when it comes to mid/endgame. Add in the value of materials and the gold gathered in dailies and you can easily make a pretty penny in minutes. If you don't I can guarantee you'll regret it, especially when you end up hiring someone from your guild to build your items for you which depending on their nature can cost nothing upwards to an arm, leg, and head. Now which part of that transaction would you rather be on?

Just a note. Don't over-level your crafting either, you'll have no use leveling your crafting to lvl 40 if you're only lvl 20 and then you've just wasted skill points that could at the time be better spend elsewhere.

Crafting in this game is far more important than most other MMOs IMO.

And even if you don't like it at all, you can decon everything, sell the mats you get from the items for as much as the item is worth anyway, and lvl them all up to 50 just in case you change your mind.

    Non-decon crafts:
Provisioning - very fast, esp. now that cooks sell writ recipes.
Alchemy - I got an add-on, made it tremendously faster.
Enchanting - by far the longest to lvl up.

Also, start researching stuff now, you won't lose anything but a few junk items here and there, and again, if you change your mind, you will thank yourself later.

You literally can have black/cloth/wood crafts all maxed out without every crafting 1 item or spending 1 skill point in them, might as well.

The game is old enough that you can find almost any trait on any item for dirt cheap in guild stores. (It wasn't always so). So it's cheap to learn crafting.

A good start is to research six traits in your preferred armor and weapons. Considering that you might rotate in two pieces of heavy to any light/medium build, do six traits on a couple of the heavies too (any pieces other than belt or hands, which offer smaller armor buffs). Make sure divines, infused and impenetrable are researched on all of the armor, precise and sharpened on weapons. This will give you the ability to craft yourself a six trait set - these tend to be the most popular for crafted sets (Hundings, Julianos, Night Mother).

You can get to the ability to make yourself a six trait set in a couple of weeks. If you hate researching, stop there. If it isn't so bad, keep on trucking.

There's an iOS/Android app called ESO Workbench. It really, really, really helps organize the crafting game.
