Whilst some people seem to be using the recently datamined information to determine what's coming, take note that Rich Lambert said this at PAX East:

"So, right now the team is actually building the editor for how it's going to work and we're establishing the permissions system so we're a way off from nailing all those things down so I don't want to commit to what it will be right now because we have to iterate on it."

Considering this, I would say the datamined content is very subjective to change, and shouldn't be relied upon too much. Some content is used as 'placeholders' or old ideas that are incomplete and/or have since been scrapped.

No no no no! I came from Archeage and the land barons were terrible. Rich players would buy up the land and then do nothing with it. Then they'd just pay up the time so it would never expire. Many of them stopped playing the actual game - - they'd just log in, pay the time, then walk away laughing as they logged out. This made it difficult for genuine buyers who would use the land to get anything. No.

Having played Star Wars Galaxies from launch, I can also admit that that system was horribly flawed. Ultima Online was another example of how that system broke.

It's like massive Realm vs Realm vs Realm. It's a great idea on paper, we all kinda want it, but it's just not practical. The reality never quite comes close to the 'plan.' Between the abuses of ill intent, lazy players, and the reailty that this isn't a real world and players can come and go at their whim (and developers who punish players leaving just ensure players don't come back).

Gated and instanced 'communities', the kind we played with in Dark Age of Camelot, Lord of the Rings Online, and eventually even Everquest, are also subject to the 'ghost town' problems, as well as needing a larger suspension of disbilief. Plus, you can still face certain issues if all the 'large' plots are bought, or you try to get guildies on the same shard, etc, etc. Still aviable option, fares better than open world design, but not perfect.

Instanced houses require suspension of belief as well, but each house is built into the game world. No outside controls, and your houses are generally limited by the zone. We've used this system in games as old as EverQuest II, to newer games like Grand Theft Auto. Developers show it works and it's the easiest to code for.

The 'own an island' principle of Wildstar is one I think would also do great in ESO. Gives you greater house controls, control over your land, and is fairly in-world considering that Tamriel has thousands of small islands (and certain mages can CREATE landmasses, so lore friendly). This is a newer principle and requires more developer resources, but it can REALLY expand a game.

But house exteriors and zoning is just the first thing we worry about. Control of the house interiors is also a huge thing. Star Wars Galaxies had a good (and often tedious) concept of allowing anything to be put anywhere and mixed together. We created many wonderous 3d designs, and almost every single item in the game had a 3d element, but it was incredibly costly as far as server resources are concerned.

The 'anchor point' system of EverQuest or Dark Age of Camelot really annoyed me more than it made me happy. I have to say I hated it, being limited to only certain items being placed in certain areas. I fear, but predict, that ESO will go with this system due to it's strong DAoC roots for many developers.

The 'set interior' system of Grand Theft Auto or even the other actual Elder Scrolls games also bothers the hell out of me. No freedom whatsoever. Your choices are limited to what the content designers decide would be good or nice, and I have to admit that I don't agree with that too often.

Everquest II, and Ultima Online, had a fairly robust system that I enjoyed alot. Control of interior materials for walls, floor, cieling, and plenty of furniture interaction and controls. Costly though, but still good.

more roleplay options, such as player journals, able to sit in chairs, sleep in beds
things like that build up over time, like if you havent cleaned your room or dusted , the dust builds up and you get cobwebs and spiders
good options for lighting, such as dimly lit rooms - able to open windows to let in the sun
    weather effects
and a lot of interact-able objects/tasks inside of the home, dont just have the home be just a static thing, where you are just displaying various furniture models

you can take a lot of cues from FFXIV or BDO, their housing systems are amazing

Was kind of hoping it would only be wayshrine accessible since then there might be the option to form the terrain around it, exterior, etc, but based on some recent data mining it looks more like it's going to be based out of houses that you can find around the world. :-(

Can someone explain to me the legitimate points to having a personal house in a massive online game where the majority of your playtime is spent running around the far corners of the map or grinding/ganking the Imperial Sewers.

I just can't imagine what real use you'd get of it. Yeah sure it may provide a place to dump those collectibles and trophies you pick up here and there but you're not gonna go back to it every time you're done playing for the day since you can log off anywhere you want.

    For housing I'd like:
*Some customisation. Maybe add a housing segments to vendors, crown store, and quest rewards. When i say segments i mean like "Bedroom Regal Dunmer", "Bedroom Ashlander Dunmer", and "Living Quarters Lion Breton". *Give an area for buffs. Like OP said give us a shrine room, I know I'd love a shrine to Sithis, Nocternal, or Almalexia. *Give an area for storage. Peoole who aren't subscribed to ESO don't get craft bags, so add in an extra area for them to store more stuff. Just to still entice people to keep subbed make it so you cannot used the stored stuff for crafting like you can with the bank. *How about a display area. We all like to show off our weapons and armour, I take pride on all the things I craft. How about giving us a room where show can show things off. *Finally make crafting locations. Give us the crafting areas right in the comfort of our own home, add in some traits for bonuses to our sets and it'd be grand. *Gimme a torture chamber. Give me an area where i can cut up some NPCs, listening to them cry out, fill up my soul gems.
What is the color of night?
What is the color of the fox?
    Hail Sithis.

I would like to be able to choose from many different locations to have my house.
I'd love for it to be modular, where I can add on rooms for different purposes.
Definitely need a trophy room. I want to show case all the things I've collected.
Would love a stable, with all the mounts I own sitting in it. And my pets running around the house freely.
Armour, where I can place all the special armour and weapons I've found on display.
I love the idea of a mini shrine, would have one for Hircine for sure!

I really also love the idea of Guild Homes. And if we can't have that, at least allow us to hang up our tabards in our houses.

And the last thing, we NEED to be able to invite friends into the house to share what it looks like, this would also be great for RP.

    That's my Housing Wishlist :)

Well, for the person you mention who spends all of his time grinding/ganking in Imperial sewers, I don't know if a house *would* be that good.

But for me, who spends all of his time wandering around collecting achievements, who doesn't particularly enjoy veteran dungeons, trials, or cyrodiil ... well, for me houses have a massive legitimate reason. They tie my character to this world, and allow my natural OCD to go out and be driven to collect, capture, and try to gain more to get a bigger or better house in general.

In the time I spent in SWG, I spent more time decorating or collecting than I EVER spent actually playing the combat mechanics. Many people just don't understand that houses aren't just stagnant storage containers to everyone, and that many (and I mean, *MANY*) find them to be a driving force, a gateway to more content and more gametime.

I can't imagine why any game wouldn't have housing. I massively enjoy my housing in Grand Theft Auto, and it serves no real benefit either. And it doesn't have to. Because housing is something more for those of us who need something more for our characters to feel 'alive'.

    ...

I don't know if I would say this.

I want to be able to decorate the surrounding area of my house (e.g. gardens, growing food), so that it looks unique also from the outside.

And I want other players to see my house by just stumbling over it, without having to be invited at first.

And I would also prefer if it would be placed next to other houses, so I can run into other house owners when leaving my house.

That's why I still kind of like the idea of "neighborhoods" from LotRo, cause I enjoyed walking around and inspect the different decorations and choosing a place with the environment and view I liked the most (although the customization was very limited).

So, I agree that some kind of instanced housing is probably better, but not for every single house. Because if every house is located in a single instance, then the place in the world where I enter the instance to my house, would look the same for everybody (at least for everybody who have their house at the same place, overlooking the fact that there might be several entries in different regions).

And there is also the drawback that my house would never feel like a part of a settlement. A home in a seperated instance always feels so... isolated.
