Sorcerer leveling

I'm currently leveling a Breton Sorcerer Magicka based and was wondering about what exactly I'm going to be focusing on. I'm using destruction staff and resto staff on my bars but am not sure what abilities I should be using from those weapon trees. If anyone has any suggestions or loadout that could be effective that'd be great. Thanks for taking the time to read this

At low levels c. shard, mages fury and force shock from destro staff would be enough. If you gonna grind, find a destro staff with Training trait and you can unlock Impulse faster.

Healing Ward from the resto skill line is a good substitute until you unlock Hardened Ward at daedric summoning rank 42. That should easily be enough healing for you, but all the skills from both destro and resto lines are worth levelling up.

Having a summond daedric familiar is very helpful if you're soloing.

summon clanfear is useful until you unlock hardened ward.

use force shock from desto skill line and pretty much all sorc dps skills are viable for leveling.

    Leveling

    1. Wear a mix of armors so they all level up. While Light is preferred for a Caster, you never know what ZOS will do so you want to be able to use any armor. Besides, armor is not all that necessary during 1 to 50, so you can get away with sub optimal armor load outs. Once you get to the point where you get the 5 Light Armor bonuses, then go 5/1/1 on the armors. Run the Training trait on at least one of each type of armor to speed this along. You should be able to get to 50 in your armors long before you get to character level 50 with the Training Trait, especially if you improve it.
    2. Have at least one skill from each class on your bar at all times until you get your class skills leveled. Either on the bar you use in combat or on the other bar so you can switch to it when turning in quests. Class skills seem to level the slowest. However your Class skills are a major benifit to your character with regards to the passives you can unlock, so you want those leveled so you can take advantage later on.
    3. Have at least one Destro Staff skill on your combat bar, you want Impulse and that is not unlocked until L38 on the weapon line.
    4. Have Inner Light slotted so you get that built up, the spell critical chance and extra magic is so nice to have.

While a Resto Staff is nice and Healers are always in demand, Power Surge is a great Self Heal and if you keep that up while in combat, you rarely need other healing. Once you unlock the Shields like Hardened Ward and Boundless Storm, you may never need any healing. So, I would not worry overmuch about speeding the Restro Staff leveling along unless you want to Heal in Group settings. If that is the case, then use the Destro Staff during combat normally, then switch to the Healing Staff when turning in quests. This will level things evenly.

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

I would recommend the following skills for low levels (up to around level 15-20 depending on the efficiency of your levelling)
    - Grand Healing -> Healing Springs (to provide constant healing)
    - unstable Familiar -> Unstable Clannfear (to keep melee attackers away from you / is a tank)
    - Crystal Shards -> Crystal Fragments
    - Daedric Curse -> Velocious Curse
    - Destructive Touch -> Destructive Touch (to level the line) / Mages Fury (if you need a finisher).
    - Overload

You can get all of these very early on. Once you unlock more skills, other good combinations (especially once you reach level 15 and get a back bar) include:

Unstable Clanfear -> Lightning Splash -> Wall of Elements (elemental blockade) plus using C. frags when available against groups of enemies.
Velocious Curse -> Elemental Blockade -> Force Shock (Force Pulse; nearly always triggers a c.frag for me) when tackling single enemies / bosses.

These should last you until levels 20-25, if not further. Buffs like Magelight are beneficial, but not necessary at lower levels. Do not forget to level Mages Fury, as it is the main finisher Mages use, and is very useful at lower levels (plus it levels super quick and its morph Endless Magicka returns Magick to you).

I also always run destro / restroration while levelling, put all attributes into Magick and use enchanted armour / jewellery. When levelling, I find it best to keep changing my bars, as skills level and others unlock, so do not panic too much about having a set layout until much later on. Finally, I wear 5 light, 1 medium and 1 heavy.

Does it matter which slot the heavy and medium armor take up? Do you want to go 5 light in say Boots, leggings, hands, belt and head, with shoulders being medium and chest being heavy? Or does it not matter all that much?

Chest gives the most protection. It can also usually be integrated into an other wise Light and Medium collection of armor quite well visually. Although Orc or maybe Reguard really needs the Shoulders to match up with the Chest, I can't remember which one needs it, it is what ever the Soulshine Dropped set motif is. Most Heavy Armor Helms look weird with other light armors, so if you hide your helm, you can use for the Heavy Armor piece if you want, or at least the off armor.
