I leveled one of my characters Legerdemain skill line in one week from entirely stealing from the five Wayrest guard houses, nothing else but see what works for you. The Legerdemain skill line has five passives available. Improved hiding will reduce the stamina cost of sneaking which will help you greatly in The Thieves Guild DLC seeing you will sneaking all the time plus the dailies are all sneaking activities. Our second passive is light fingers and allows you to pickpocket much easier, you will need this boost as a lot of the main quests in The Thieves Guild DLC has you stealing items from certain NPCs. Trafficker allows you to fence more items every day, this skill I found handy to level Legerdemain much faster plus on average you can make 2k-5k per day from just fencing simple white items and spending about 15mins gathering all the items… that easy money! The locksmith passive will improve your chances of forcing locks which is a massive help when you’re in a hurry and need to get that chest open before someone sees you so it’s well worth the points. The final passive is called Kickback which reduces what you pay for your bounties however I imagine this will come in more handy once The Dark Brotherhood DLC is released next quarter as bounties aren’t that big with just stealing (killing they are much larger) and besides a good thief will never get caught in the first place. There are tons of items to plunder but especially look out for the green and blue ones as they reap the biggest reward and the biggest experience.

NPCs
Most NPC’s in the game have something worth stealing but look out for the NPC’s which are listed as hard as these will grant you the best items and the most experience.

Taverns
If you’re looking for cheap items to fence taverns usually have lots sitting on the shelves but be careful because it’s much easier for people to spot you in these tight areas

Docks
A great spot to find simple items are the many Docks around Tamriel. You can occasionally find a green item but most of the time these locations are great just to fill your fence quota for the day.

Livestock
Oh the poor livestock! Believe it or not livestock can be slaughtered and then the meat can be sold for additional XP and gold. Larger livestock like cows and sheep will generate more meat compared to chickens, naturally.

Guard House
These are the BEST locations in the game for stealing items! They usually stock lots of weapons and armour which can be sold for a tidy sum plus there is no guards in the guard tower so you can steal without fear of being caught. Most guard towers will also re-populate very quickly so you can get your fence quota within 15mins.

Advanced House
These houses contain the best loot so loot everything just don’t get caught because some of the NPC’s can be hostile!

Advanced Lockboxes
The best loot is found in these silver boxes, handy if your force locks is high enough so you don’t get caught as they are constantly being monitored.

Advanced NPCs
Lots of great items can be found but pick the best time as you don’t want someone else noticing you. If you watch their walk pattern around the house it’s usually pretty easy to pick the right time… just don’t get caught or they will attack you and call the guards!

    I thought killing livestock en masse and selling the guts, meat was the fastest way to level it up?

    Not sure if its changed or not but it wasn't the fastest way for me especially when your looking over your shoulder to make sure no one sees you. If your in a guard tower you steal with no one watching you and each piece goes for around 30 gold, way more then meat or guts a piece.

    Purely what I found anyway.

    Have yall seen anything worth more than 250g when selling to a fence I can't seem to find purple stolen items. All I find is white 40g, green 100g, and blue 250g stolen items

    In regards to fencing items, you cannot level any faster than your max # of laundered/sold items per day.

    Now, If it takes you less actual game-time each day by collecting sheep meat, or whatever, than say pickpocketing or stealing from houses, then yes, you are getting the max xp for that activity (fencing) each day with less play time.


    So you can collect 220 sheep mean and sell/launder in an hour, I can steal 220 items in 4 hours, you spent less time, but in the end, we both met our max fence xp for that particular day.

    Nice guide!

    I have found a purple item not too long ago.
    Worth 1500g.. Wonder how rare that is?
