This was a group discussion between my friends so its not just my opinion, so ill try to explain our reasoning
1. Tamriel is currently in a state of war, and King Emeric is a merchant, At the end of the war the economy will fall through with the lack of consumption on wartime materials and the like, and tamriel will need a leader with a strong buisness mind to pull tamriel through those tough times.
2. Skyrim kinda torched our opinion of the dominion, even if they are different in 2nd era, they are just 2 steps away from becoming the 4th era racists in many regards.
The rather irritating player community i have observed on my alts lend more credence to my personal dislike of this faction, no offense meant if you are of that faction and consider yourself a good person, my experiance with AD, aside from the roleplaying crowd, has been universally negative
3. We have spent time in skyrim and morrowind already, as they were the more recent games, but it has been ages since we have spent time in daggerfall and high rock. So we wanted a nostalgic experiance, but were more or less put off by the possiblity of EVERYONE flocking to EP and drowning it in a large population
These were the biggest reasons for choosing DC, and even today, i maintain many of these reasons, even if i have a alt in each faction, DC is home
You have some awesome friends. I wish my friends were into this game. I tried getting one to play and all she did was *** and moan about not having a mini-map, other random things..
Daggerfall Covenant
Under the fanboy portion,
Daggerfall is simply still the best game in the series, even if Morrowind won the company more mainstream appeal.
Under the role-play portion, there are a few factors
Emeric's political capabilities and value of the economic prosperity the Empire brings are relatively noble. None of the leaders are perfect people, but feel his view of the Ruby Throne is most level-headed.
Pact would have been my second choice, as their valuing of cultural identity and the efforts they have made as an organization to deal with the stain of Argonian slavery is meaningful, even if it does not last.
Aryenn left a poor taste in my mouth before the Beta with her letter that used to be on the main site, where she talks about how the 'races of Man' (which I guess also includes the Orsimer, Argonians and Dunmer somehow?) are lacking in the wisdom to run an empire, and that an Altmer infant would be a better option for an Emperor than any human.
Comprehend that she has to unite the races of her alliance against a common enemy, but it just always felt a little in poor taste and cast a different light on her whole approach to rule in game -- she talks about the importance of equality, but still has an underlying sentiment that the Altmer race is superior to the other races.Where I live, this same type of disparaging racial sentiment gets thrown around in real life, so I may be less forgiving towards it than other players, but my characters could not support Altmer supremacy, especially given it is the type of sentiment that leads to the genocide of the Argonian hatchlings ):
Since I had the opportunity to try all the alliances in Beta, had a good basis for comparison of the early quests and what they would imply for my characters -- decided on Covenant as I liked the representations to High Rock and Hammerfell culture they provided; there is sort of a feeling of political intrigue and interior tensions while sorting out issues for the alliance, whereas a lot of the Pact questline is sorting out subversive attacks from the other alliances.
