I recently returned to the game after a long absence (I actually started in beta), and of course my characters weren't in any guilds. I joined up to a couple and the first thing I noticed was their activity requirements. One of them, a fairly large and active one, had a requirement of a minimum 4k gold sale history per week (with certain membership levels requiring much more than that). Now, to most established and active fans, that's probably very easy to do, but in my case I'm just starting to play again with all that's entailed with that - levelling the character, levelling crafting, figuring out how it all works, and doing it with a limited amount of play time. Much of the things I gather I need myself to level my crafts, and none of my toons are veteran level. So in order to meet a requirement I have to sell things I need for myself.
I guess I don't quite understand the driving need for guilds to get gold. Yes, I know they need to spend on those vendors - but what is the ultimate aim of having gold in a guild bank? What is it used for? If its purely for the vendor, that seems a bit cyclical - making gold to make vendor to make gold. But for what purpose?
I am in a small guild of some friends I've met through another game, and that guild doesn't even have a store, but it does have plenty of support for items that are shared through the bank. That is more like the kind of guild I know from other games. The whole "Gold Rush" system puzzles me.
