Marketing guilds and requirements

I recently returned to the game after a long absence (I actually started in beta), and of course my characters weren't in any guilds. I joined up to a couple and the first thing I noticed was their activity requirements. One of them, a fairly large and active one, had a requirement of a minimum 4k gold sale history per week (with certain membership levels requiring much more than that). Now, to most established and active fans, that's probably very easy to do, but in my case I'm just starting to play again with all that's entailed with that - levelling the character, levelling crafting, figuring out how it all works, and doing it with a limited amount of play time. Much of the things I gather I need myself to level my crafts, and none of my toons are veteran level. So in order to meet a requirement I have to sell things I need for myself.

I guess I don't quite understand the driving need for guilds to get gold. Yes, I know they need to spend on those vendors - but what is the ultimate aim of having gold in a guild bank? What is it used for? If its purely for the vendor, that seems a bit cyclical - making gold to make vendor to make gold. But for what purpose?

I am in a small guild of some friends I've met through another game, and that guild doesn't even have a store, but it does have plenty of support for items that are shared through the bank. That is more like the kind of guild I know from other games. The whole "Gold Rush" system puzzles me.

Those vendors are EXPENSIVE if they're in the hot spots. While a closely guarded secret within each guild, the best spots can fetch over 4 Million gold each and every week.

Yes, I get that. But what do guilds DO with those millions of gold?

Spend it all on buying the trader to earn them gold to buy the trader the week after so that they can sell enough to buy...

    Yeah, fun stuff

It's a normal investment. You pay for something because you assume that you'll get more money from it in the end. For further explaination turn off your computer, go to your favourite shop and ask the owner why he pays his rent.

What he is saying is that guild traders can cost that much. However, the price drops RAPIDLY once you get past the top tier of traders.

What my guilds generally do is give me a choice of minimum sales, buy lotto tickets, or pay dues. Dues are something like 1k -2k a week, depending on the guild. But if I was not selling a lot I would have no need to that type of guild. I am also in one guild that is much more relaxed about it, with the only requirement being that we stay active. They always get a 2nd tier trader (one in a smaller city) and sales are ok. You just have to look around to find what fits you.

Im assuming the comment beneath your post relating to sarcasm applies to this one too. Because on a purely literal sense I do not understand it. Of course, I can't hear your tone of voice....

No, I was serious. Let me give you an example. Imagine you find one valuable item each week and let's say you know that there are a few players that would pay 100k gold for that item.
Now if you just try to sell it in zone chat, you might be able to get 80k for that item, but you can't find the people who would pay 100k in the chat. Then you would have the choice, either selling it for 80k or putting it in a popular guild store for 100k so the people who need it will find it even when they are online at a different time than you.
So in that case the guild store would provide 20k extra and even if you have to pay 10k taxes to use it, it is still better than selling it via zone chat for 80k.

I agree with you. I didn't say and don't believe that guild stores aren't a good feature. (Personally, I'd prefer an ingame auction house because of its convenience, but that's just me).

I wasn't commenting on the benefits or otherwise of guild stores. I was simply wondering where (or who) all that gold goes to beyond the repeated cycle of paying for a trader.

The problems start when the shop keeper isn't making enough profit to cover his rent, so has to phone up his suppliers and start asking them to donate money towards paying the price of his artificially high rent.
