I'm SO frikken tired of the instruments in Elder Scrolls, you have NO idea.

If we're going Scots, though, let it be GOOD Scots: Kilt WITH tartan, sporran, the whole shabang.
    Not to mention CLAYMORES.

    I have spoken. :P

Fun fact: kilts were originally designed to make it easier for people to strap more knives to their bodies.

So I think it would definitely be lore friendly, and I'm all for it 8D

I think it'd be a Nord thing, more than any other race. And before you all go "what, no, it's cold up there"; it has temperate regions, Nords are naturally cold resistant, and northern Scotland is practically always covered in snow.

The Bretons would probably also adopt lighter/thinner versions, probably as a fad.

Kilts are healthier for men to wear than pants. And many cultures througout history have used the 'skirt' design in their armor. One exampe; the romans.

    Besides, they are badass.

    Kilt

    ar_imperial.jpg

You can call it a kilt if you want but it was a plain blue skirt worn by women in all the towns and imperial soldiers.

the skirt the redoran guard wore was the height of fashion for upperclass ladies

You are confusing tartan and kilt. Tartan IS the kilt. The part you are calling a tartan is a highlander style and is called a plaid, but it's in the same colors the kilt is. Tartan is the color pattern on the kilt and plaid if it's included.

Also, the pattern on the so called "wannabe" is a tartan. Though the colors are not of any clan I know of.

Well first, I linked the imperial armor from Morrowind, so no it wasn't a ladies fashion piece. Second, video game designers recycle resources to make interesting armors. hence a female skirt used on a mail guards uniform. But it doesn't change that the two are not both called a skirt. Skirts are cut and worn differently. The terms are not interchangeable.

    Ah, my bad.
I'm Belgian, I'm allowed to make this mistake... lol
But I was referring to the material of which a true kilt is made of, and the modern skirts they try to call kilts.
To me, the only real kilt is the heavy woolen one.
And I'm fairly sure, quite a few think like this.

Possibly, but even today not all tartans are made of wool. The more traditional ones are, but even when wearing a kilt on a hot summer day the wool can get pretty uncomfortable. I believe my clans tartan comes in wool or cotton, I'll have to look.

    Yeah here you go:

Colourful, luxurious tartan fabrics finely woven in rich and striking colour. In wool, silk, and man made fibres. Traditional 'Woven in Scotland' kilting cloth (plaid) in Mediumweight and Heavyweight Pure New Wool.

that's a copy paste from a tartan manufacturing site.

I would place kilts with the Bretonic cultural region of Rivenspire. Knowing that Bretons are far from a unified culture, it would make sense that the Bretons of the highlands region of Rivenspire would most closely resemble, culturally, the Scots.

Well, sadly the breton culture is closer to franks/bretons irl. Scots/picts/celts are closer to the reachmen in Skyrim.

+1 Vote just for properly using "tartan". So tired of everyone assuming the pattern is called plaid.
Plaid comes from the Gaelic, the names are interchangeable to describe the same pattern of cloth.

No, All tartans are plaid, but, not all plaids are tartan.

To keep things simple, I'm just going to stick to the basics and try not to overwhelm you with too much technical detail. All plaids and tartans are comprised of stripes (in varying sizes and colors) that meet at a 90-degree angle. We start heading into 'tartan' territory by looking at the geometry on the pattern. With most every tartan, the pattern on the stripes running vertically is exactly duplicated on the horizontal axis too. Basically, this matching pattern in both directions will create a grid. The warp and weft threads are then woven in a two-over-two "twill" pattern. When looking at a simple plaid, you'll notice that the stripes — either in color, size, or pattern — are not the same in both directions.

    Original post http://www.housebeautiful.com/home-remodeling/interior-designers/q-and-a/a2099/difference-between-tartan-and-plaid/

Also, whilst tartan refers to woollen cloth woven in one of several patterns of coloured checks and intersecting lines; plaid can refer to the same thing but, usually in the UK, it refers to a specific long piece of tartan worn over the shoulder as part of Highland dress.

The last line is the most relevant one, the whole first paragraph is unreliable info from a designer. Designers have their own made-up definitions of things because they appropriated the language and the tradition to turn a profit, they couldn't care less about the language or authenticity. To be clear, tartan is the name of the pattern, and a plaid is basically an over-the-shoulder cloth. I don't blame you for linking to a fashion page to try to tease out the truth (I mean, it's a fair assumption they should be an authority on the matter), but when it comes to traditional patterns and clothing of different cultures they tend to get absolutely everything wrong.
