Transmogrification

Hi all,
if you've played Diablo 3 after the Reaper of Souls expansion you might have a solid idea where I'm going with this but if you haven't, I'll be happy to go into detail.
Basically, it would be the ability to change the appearance of a currently owned item into a previously acquired item of the same type/weight. For example, you have a Maelstrom Inferno Staff, and you have a Moondancer Inferno Staff, and you would like for said Maelstrom Inferno Staff to take on the appearance of the Moondancer one so you talk to (insert NPC here) and they allow you to change the appearance only for a fee. To clarify too, before someone says it will make it so we don't know what armor or weapon type people are wearing, this would be restricted to only items of the exact same category, (heavy armor for heavy, daggers for daggers). If you like or dislike, or even have feedback on this feel free to respond! ... Especially if you are a developer ;)

I've suggested this a few times, and others has too. I don't think Zenimax has ever acknowledge our wish to get something like this in game, so it will most likely never happen. Sorry.

The disguise of the transmogrified weapon/armor isn't really an issue in my opinion. For example, in a PvP battle, you don't have 2 seconds to recognize that an enemy in front of you has a maelstrom staff ... and plan out a 1v1 battle to counter said staff ... since the player is likely to have other skills at their disposal.

What is an issue (been discussed in other threads) is that transmogrification would render the trait system nearly useless. I think a player should at least have a trait material (in inventory) of the style they intend to change to. Otherwise, there's absolutely no use to collect trait materials.

For non-crafted items such as maelstrom and moondancer, something similar, in my opinion, would have to be issued in terms of a trait material (in case those items are craftable in the future).

Not opposed to your idea ... it's a good one. Just want to make sure all impacts of the change are thought of.

@talesof2cities I think it would be fine if it additionally required a corresponding style material, for items that cannot be crafted, maybe a new miscellaneous item could be created to be used on transaction in its place?

The option already exists for those who bought the Imperial Edition, I can transmog any armor that's not a set piece into the Imperial Style so the technology already exists in game to do this... as for whether It will be done, that's another matter entirely.

EQ2 has two slots for every single item, one is what your stats are based off of, the other is what your appearance is based off of. That way, you can equip anything you want regardless of look, and just override it with anything.

It really brought back lower tier crafting, as some of the lower lvl looks were quite popular but had no stat value (say you like the look of Jute cloth, no problem!)

This gets mentioned every so often, yes...

And indeed, it would make a neat perk for master craftsmen, to be able to change armor appereance. Both from one style to another, and from one item level appereance to another, in style and material...
I would love to see it added to the game sometime, not just like the imperial edition style, but as added function to crafting stations, perhaps like temper improvements, where you can spend style materials and other resources to change the looks of your gear, with a destruction chance migrated by spending more materials and so on...
An altrnate idea has always been to use a item of the same type, with the appereance you want to transplant to your chosen piece, to be consumed as ingredient. Also possible, though the former idea would make crafting and styles more valuable to know, and thus be something I might prefer...

They would have to do it in a way that the player doesn't circumvent the crafting restrictions as in you can't change the look of something to a motif you don't already have.
