Hard decision

So first, some back story:
I started at pc early access back when eso first launched. I loved the game at first, and mained a nightblade. Now, I only get a few hours a week to actually play, and I've never been a fast leveler - more of a completionist. By the time eso went live for consoles, my nightblade was vet 3, and I had a vet 1 templar. I took the transfer/account copy to ps4 at console release because, at the time, I had more friends and family interested in the console version (or unable to run eso on their pcs).

At first, console was good, it was a breath of fresh air for the gameplay, but the problems quickly made themselves apparent: loading issues, lag, no text chat, and the realization of just how terrible the trade system is without access to mods/addons. Needless to say, my friends didn't keep playing for long, and I ended up going to other games back in July.

I came back to the game 2 or 3 weeks ago to see how things have changed. Some things are better but the issues with console are just too much to deal with. So today, I updated my game on pc. I'll lose a lot of progress changing platforms again, but I still have my vet 3 nb, vet 1 temp, and around 60k gold in the bank to fall back on.

So here's my dilemma: as much as I like my nightblade and templar, I'm not quite sure it's the best idea to stick with them. I love the weapon - oriented playstyle of the nightblade, mine is set up more like a Warrior than a rogue, but I just never seem to be as effective as I think I should be.
On the flip side, I've been working on a dragon knight on ps4 lately (only level 26 though) and that class seems to have so much more to offer. Both magicka and stamina builds are supported equally well by the dk's abilities and passives, and they seem to be far more versatile than any other class.

So if I'm going to be losing progress by switching back to pc, should I just start over anyways with a new character? In any of the three roles, will a dragon knight be more efficient than my nightblade could be?
PS4 / NA
M'asad - Khajiit Nightblade - Healer
Pakhet - Khajiit Dragonknight - Tank
Raksha - Khajiit Sorcerer - Stamina DPS
Bastet - Khajiit Templar - Healer
Leonin - Khajiit Warden - Tank

You claim to have all this experience with the game so not sure if your "dilemma" is real.

I also started in beta, played for a year or so, and have come back to the game for about a couple weeks now.

I used to play a Sorc and DK but found that I preferred the NB way more than either of the others. I don't care one bit what is more "efficient" or not; I don't care one bit what the current FOTM build is now (my NB is dual wield, stamina). I play what I consider to be fun and I suggest you do the same.

But I think you already anticipated that answer as this sort of post has been made time and time again. So again, not sure your "dilemma" is real or not.

If you transferred that account, you'll have to repurchase ESO for PC and start over.

I don't believe that this is true - I still have my PC account and hopped on briefly for TG on PTS.

I'm only guessing since I see it mentioned a good bit in the forums. People have transferred, wanted to go back to PC, and couldn't. I've only ever used PC, so not sure of all the console stuff....My only consoles are an N64 and Game Cube :)

This. You don't need to buy the game again, or roll new characters, you can resume the PC version exactly from where you left it. All you're missing is the content done on console. You can of course start again if you prefer. There is no facility to transfer back from console to PC. Account-wide achievements and Crown Store purchases are specific to the version they were earned/purchased on.

Stick w/ console man. I'm in same boat as you, but text chat is coming to console soonish. Its a breath of fresh air to not have to deal with addons/bots, etc. Don't be a min/maxer. It's a waste of time. Enjoy the ride.

I think it really comes down to what you're more comfortable playing on.

VR is supposed to be gone soon, so I guess it depends on how important you feel your progress in CP's is on PS4.

I've seen some really high DPS numbers on all classes. They can all be effective, and there are things I like about all of them.

IMO do the class you like the mechanics of the best and learn it well.

My favorite has always been Nightblade and I have gone from Stamina to Magicka to Stamina and am now I am back to Magicka.

Ok, so for contrast, in most mmos and rpgs I tend to play the druid, shaman, or whatever is the most versatile hybrid class. The nightblade doesn't seem very conducive to that, though the templar is to some degree. I really hate the templar abilities and animations though.

The dragon knight, on the other hand, has several skills that seem perfect for a hybrid playstyle. Inferno can boost both melee and spell crit, igneous weapons can boost both weapon and spell damage, and dk seems to have a good selection of abilities with stamina morphs.

I guess I'm just trying to either convince myself that nightblade is fine, or that I'd rather do dk.

Some people prefer having some addons. There is nothing wrong with wanting them. This game would be a lot less enjoyable for many people if addons weren't available. And being a min/maxer is only a waste of time if it is something that is not important to you. Enjoy the ride! To each their own :)

It rather depends on how you prefer to play, whether solo or group, PvE or PvP, as to whether you need to be concerned with optimising your class and build etc.

As a purely solo/cooperative PvEer taking my time with the game I have no interest in following FOTM classes and builds, and I have a couple of NBs who are designed very differently. One is a dark elf dual-wielding assassin, very much at home in the Thieves Guild, the other is a Wood Elf archer, more at home sorting out the corruption to the forests etc, and he's actually my original MMO character who was first created as a Half Elf druid in EQ. I don't actively role-play my characters, but they all have different styles.

Bear in mind the first rule of MMOs, which is that a class that is over-powered this month will be nerfed next month, so go for the class, build, and style that suit you rather than the one that everyone swears by until the next balancing update when everything will change!

There is, of course, no reason to limit yourself to one class or another, you have 8 character slots and can use them to try out different classes and builds with a view to settling on a favourite later, or you can find that, for example,. the NB and DK are both fun classes so you'd like to play both of them!

go back to PC and continue playing your character that you like.
Starting over shouldn't be an issue because you're identifying the desire is to leave console.

The only problem is progress which...well...is only an issue if you don't like the game enough to do things over.
*but is that really a dilemma? Other than any crown purchases, its just rolling an alt but you'll get the CP catch up so it should be fun as you're back to where you want to play.

The nightblade is a strong class with quite a bit of versatility. If you really liked playing that, I would suggest still playing it. You will have to change from how you played because many things have changed. Haven't played the DK much since the latest updates, so it's hard to compare.

If you want versatility, roll a dunmer dk. They have 6% boost to both stam and magicka, so you can go either way and flip-flop however and whenever you like.

Skye Cloude - Sorc DPS, Master Crafter. Main, the bestest
Lae Lenne - Templar Healer Trial grade.
Dromede - Stamina Nightblade, she's a newb and doesn't know what she's doing
V'oghatta - Stamplar pretending to be a tank
Ulville Thonvella - aspiring Fire Mage, be careful around her fire sticks!
Dromedaris - lost and not found. Named after a shoe, what else can you expect from her? A proper tank in her wildest dreams
Swims-Naked - too pretty to grind, too silly to quest.
Sun Flair - Dunmer Templar that can't spell for life. To bad she's too broke to afford a name change... Well, at least she's pretty...

Do you have at least one Veteran rank character? If so, I would try to play mainly that one for the next couple months to build up champion points.

Later, once Dark Brotherhood drops, as long as you have at least around 160 champion points or whatever the level cap amount is, all your VR characters will be max level, so you can level totally new characters after that from 1 - 50 in about a day and reach max level.

I've found all four classes can be a lot of fun, and although some might have it a bit easier than others, the overall balance has improved a lot since 2014 launch and there are quite viable stamina and magicka builds for each class.

If you will play khajiit, the racial bonuses benefit nightblade builds the most.

I play at least one of every class on my pc. Sorcerer, Templar, and Nightblade have been the easiest for me to play in that order with DK being last. Sorcerer had been face role and the easiest to play. Templar had been buffed and is a solo monster through content, Nightblade is strong but tricky to play. DK has been nerfed into the ground so is a little harder for me to play then even a NB. Bows have been dps buffed some, so they work a lot better then before. Vamp has good sneaking ability and a nice stunning Drain Essence. Werewolf had a good tanking ultimate that lets you handle groups of NPC's easily. Welcome back and I can't really imagine someone playing without mods but some people just don't play with them. I just do PvE so all of this is from that prospective. Welcome back.

I'd like to stay on console but guild traders are worthless without addons. Seriously, how many times are we going to have to *** to zenimax before they get off their asses and fix this broken system? What takes seconds to do on pc takes hours for console, it's ridiculous, and just adding text chat isn't going to resolve that.

Well...I think there is a difference between suggesting something isn't "broken" or that it is "broken" by comparing it to use with and without an addon.

Also, the impacts of addons has huge results both positive and negative depending on who is using them.
I like the vanilla game and while it has opportunities, on console, overall I prefer console game-play over PC.

I prefer the PC graphics over console tho.

Gotta make a call and no one has to stick to one or another cause if have PC access and console so I bounce back and forth but I primarily play on xbox cause I like it better.
