Honestly I found death too nice of a fate for Nicolas, hence the reason I ruined his "retirement", broke up his engagement, and had his newly found love turn him over to Taneth.

I told his fiancee what a bum he was, and she kicked him. Here i am, going to Elden Root's Thieves Delve, and i see him fishing in peace! Moreover, when i approached him, he gave me a guilt trip and told me to go mind my business as i was scaring away his dinner 0_0

Normally my character is a bleeding heart pacifist, but I gutted this a-hole like a fish and have no regrets.

My first character (main) is "goodhearted". Always tries to save everyone. She thought "I just have to protect the soon-to-be-wife to not get involved with that a**hole". Thus she left him alive and the girl left him.

My second character, a redguard templar, is also "goodhearted", but more of the rigid kind - and less forgiving. Evil must die, that's all. He killed Nicolas without a second thought and felt sorry for the virtual widow.

My third character is a vampire, and must keep it a secret all the time. She isn't that shocked about treason and tends to empathize with people who must hide things and have their own agenda. However, she is also a woman, and does not like how that wannabe Don Giovanni manipulated the heart of 3 nice women in a row in such a short time. She hesitated, but then killed him, thinking "after all, why bother" ?

True, but sacrificing or saving Valaste is also a spoiler, as is what you decide to do with a certain Orc in Wrothgar. Thanks though!

So far amongst the storylines of Fighters and Mages guilds, the Thieves' one was the less interesting.
After all these years, and considering the end of Orsinium's storyline, I was expecting something more and not just a local matter, I hope other quests will be added to the Thieves Guild.

About "The one that got away":
both Nicolas and Zeira had their faults on that failed heist, so I agreed with Velsa and Walks-Softly giving him a lockpick before and because of honor among thieves. Show him a lesson or not, it seemed better for my main.
Random events decided for him and he was lucky with the storm.
Previous marriage with Falorah was mainly for business reasons, this one seemed different.
Ruin his retirement was tempting but it would have left around someone angered and to be tracked who could have become a problem for the Thieves Guild.

Options for me then were just two: to kill him or let him stay with Vanu, living a new life with his remorses, so quite a good punishment.
As a member of Dark Brotherhood or a Nightingale, I would have simply killed him but, as a member of Thieves Guild, I preferred to follow the code and not to kill.
Untill outcast and trackable in a specific location Nicolas is not a threat and he could become useful having an obligation.

He betrayed the guild, but then the guild betrayed him when I didn't give him a lockpick to escape

And when the time came, I decided to let him live with his new wife. Since I'm a Thief, not an Assassin

All debts have been paid

I let him live, because the quest led me into that building that I never thought would be accessible.

If only we could resurrect...
It would be fun to kill him a few dozen times.
