Which do you prefer to do at anchors?

I didn't realize it mattered. I thought the final pinion doesn't appear until all the spawns have been killed. That's how it seems to work when I solo them.

That is what I see. Four around the edges, then after they are all gone, a 5th, then one more critter/round.

Anyway to answer the actual question, if no one else is there, I usually zone chat that I'm at whatever dolmen, and it has/has not started up yet.
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.
    ***
Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis

If you run an anchor by yourself the 4th pinion may appear before about the last 2, 3 tops Daedra spawn. Usually you are so busy killing them you don't notice, which is understandable.

However the anchor scales to the number of people present, up to a certain amount. 3+ people increases the number of Daedra spawned considerably, and you can easily ready the 4th pinion before the last several appear. People that arrive late in the anchor run increase the spawns too.

Depends what everyone else is doing- if they're going after pinions, I'll cover them.
If they're slaughtering everything, I usually can't even get a hit in, so go after the pinions
Same. As someone mentioned above, I also didn't think the fourth pinion even opened up until all the daedra were dead. Each pinion takes a certain number of daedric animi to activate, so I assumed the number required was directly related to the number of enemies, such that more players > more enemies > more required for pinion.

I've been told various things about leaving the pinions up. For example, I've been told (i.e. screamed at in voice chat) by multiple people that you only kill the "trash deadra" until forth pinion pops, and then kill the rest. That supposedly increases the chance of a "rare chest" which contains rare motifs and purple gear. And that closing even one pinion resets the RNG

    So I do whatever...

Yeah that rumor was addressed awhile back as false by Zenimax.

Closing the pinions does not effect the mobs or RNG of getting a name boss. This was addressed by Zos as stated above on a ESO live episode. Just to prove how "Urban Legends" can start, some of my guildies started one that if you pick lock tumblers in order starting from back to front, you get more gold. Wanna know how many people believed it... Tons...Lol.
But for OP, no it doesn't matter. Fact.

Me too - depends how it is going, especially if soloing or not. If there is a crowd I let the group dictate.

During Cake Week, my sister and I grinded dolmens to get a couple of alts up to VR1. Surprisingly, we did encounter one person who still believed the "don't hit any pinions until all are dead to increase chances of boss round" myth that was debunked on ESO Live. We had to quickly correct them, as we used pinions to restore resources -- I usually needed one early on, as the ritualists and first wave of enemies usually had me running low, since I went in guns blazing. Didn't need them griping about that.

Also ran into various veteran ranks at low-level zones for a couple of reasons. Some were boss-hunting, killing the enemies too quickly and robbing us of XP. They gladly stepped back so we could do the dirty work once they realized that. Some were outright killing everything on purpose to rob low-levels of experience, saying how it wasn't "the way to raise a toon" or some such. Hmph. Fortunately, we were able to get away from them and keep up our pace.

We were having fun and getting a nice boost in the process, so they can take their opinion of the "right way" to do it and stuff it in a Cheesemonger's Hollow, if you get my drift. ;P

Same goes for people that like to disrupt others. Also who cares who is king of whatever? Griefers are the toxicity of a community.

Whether I close pinions as early as possible or not depends on the situation.

I've only got one character I cared about getting the various anchor achievements on, and he's already got them all, so I don't care about making sure I close pinions to count towards that. Because I don't care about that achievement, I usually leave the pinions to anyone else who happens to be in the area, on the chance that they might be going for that achievement.

If nobody else is in the area and I'm doing the dolmen solo, I typically don't close the pinions until everything's dead, but that's not a conscious decision so much as me not paying attention to the pinions because I'm fighting the mobs.

If I've screwed up somehow and I'm low on resources, however, then I'll close whatever pinions I can get to as quickly as I can.

    It depends...

If I'm busy with something and a anchor spawns nearby I want to destroy it quickly.
If I'm hunting Deadra the other option applies.

But if people say to me to first kill the Deadra when I want to get it done quick, I cooperate.

I usually do the last mob, unless I am farming generals then I don't care about one or 2 little daedra. Unless they are atronachs...

    So here is my answer:

If I am playing a crappy-class or I am seriously under-leveled for the Dolmen I am doing I will close the pinions as soon as I need resources or health, if I am solo-ing I will close them if there is time in between the fight. I usually leave the 4th one up to kill the final boss.

Unless I am farming generals as I stated.

If there are monsters, I kill them. I usually don't even think about the pinions until everything is dead. But I don't do it specifically for the exp and I don't really care if other people close pinions early, so I chose the "doesn't matter to me" option.
